WEST CHESTER, Pa.
– Senior catcher Nicole Cruts (Warren Hills H.S./Washington, N.J.) recorded four hits and drove in two runs as West Chester University (14-10) swept a non-conference doubleheader over Goldey-Beacom College (11-8) at the Golden Rams' South Campus Field on Wednesday afternoon.

After earning a 5-1 victory in the opener, the Golden Rams overcame a 4-0 deficit to earn a 9-5 win in the nightcap.

The Golden Rams took a quick 1-0 lead in the first inning of the first game when sophomore Charlotte Conaway (Radnor H.S./Radnor, Pa.) scored after a Goldey-Beacom error. With one out in the third inning, West Chester extended its advantage to 2-0 when Cruts singled to score junior Jessica Russ (Martinsburg H.S./Martinsburg, W. Va.).

West Chester added a run in the fourth inning after a Goldey-Beacom error before freshman Samantha Alonzo (Roy C. Ketcham H.S./Wappinger Falls, N.Y.) cut the Lightning deficit to 3-1 on a fielder's choice that scored senior Jordan Waterloo (Thomas Stone H.S./Waldorf, Md.).

But, the Golden Rams answered in the bottom of the fifth inning when sophomore Jessica Norris (Spring-Ford H.S./Royersford, Pa.) drove in a run on a single to center field. They upped the cushion to 5-1 in the sixth inning on a single by senior Abby Block (Upper Darby H.S./Drexel Hill, Pa.).

In the nightcap, the Lightning exploded for four runs in the top of the third inning to take a 4-0 lead over West Chester. After sophomore Ashley Zaccaria (Gloucester City H.S./Gloucester City, N.J.) singled through the left side with one out to open the scoring, freshman Alexa Houston (Sussex Central H.S./Georgetown, Del.) drew a walk to score Waterloo, giving Goldey-Beacom a 2-0 edge.

The Lightning added to their lead later in the inning when freshman Katrina Swank (Caravel Academy/Bear, Del.) drove in two runs with a single up the middle.

After West Chester cut the deficit to 4-2 in the bottom of the third inning with a pair of runs, the Golden Rams scored six runs on seven hits in the fourth inning to take a commanding 8-4 lead. Sophomore Jessica Schuck (Council Rock South H.S./Richboro, Pa.) drove in a run on a single to left field. Then, Conaway tied the game at 4-4 when she hit an RBI double on the left side.

Russ tied the game at 4-4 with an RBI single before sophomore Kelly Anderson (Caravel Academy/Middletown, Del.) gave West Chester a 7-4 advantage when she drove in two runs on a single to left field. Cruts added an RBI double to left center field, increasing the cushion to 8-4.

With one out in the fifth inning, West Chester added to its lead when sophomore Megan Kelly (Hatboro-Horsham H.S./Hatboro, Pa.) tripled to right center field.

Waterloo trimmed the Goldey-Beacom deficit to 9-5 in the top of the sixth inning with a single to left field, scoring senior Shannon Graves (Glassboro H.S./Glassboro, N.J.) from third base. However, the Lightning was unable to get any closer.

Cruts led the Golden Rams to the doubleheader sweep by going four-for-seven with two runs batted in while Anderson contributed two hits and three RBIs. Junior Devon Utterback (Central Bucks South H.S./Warrington, Pa.) earned both wins in the circle. After allowing just three hits in a complete game victory, she earned the win in relief in the nightcap by allowing just three hits in 3.2 innings.
