Softball Starts the Season 1-0

Sadie Jones allowed only 1 hit in the win
Box Score Salisbury, North Carolina

Goldey-Beacom softball started the 2012 season on a winning note today. Senior pitcher Sadie Jones earned the win allowing one hit in a rain-shortened five inning game as the lightning ladies were victorious 2-1 over the Fairmount State College Falcons.

The Lightning struck immediately in the first inning when senior right fielder Shannon Graves slapped a single through the hole on the right side. An excellent bunt down the third base line by sophomore Michelle Foster moved Graves up to second base, Graves stole third on the next pitch and later scored on a passed ball to give the Lightning a 1-0 lead. Jones came out firing for the Lightning right from the start sitting down the first six batters she faced, two by the way of strikeout. The Lightning added to their lead in the third inning from the likes of Veronica Peters who laced a double to the left centerfield fence to score Foster who led off the inning with a single. The falcons cut the gap in half in the bottom of the 4th inning on an unearned run.  The Lightning offense went stale in the 5th going three up, three down which allowed the Falcons to threaten in their half of the inning. Jones retired the first batter, the next Falcon batter singled to center and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. An untimely passed ball on catcher Danielle Rice allowed the runner to move to third. Junior pitcher Ashley Antosh relieved Jones in the middle of the count against the Falcons lead off batter. Antosh walked the only batter she faced, with runners threatening on first and third Rice made up for the passed ball by throwing out the runner attempting to steal second base for the third out and relieving Antosh from the jam.

The sixth inning began with a lead off base on balls by Rice, with freshman Samantha Alonzo at the plate the North Carolina skies opened up and a torrential rain began to fall. With puddles covering the field and the contest beyond the fifth inning the game was called and the Lightning took the 2-1 win.

The Lightning continue non-conference action tomorrow with two games which are to be determined.
