The Goldey-Beacom Lightning couldn't hold on in non-conference action this afternoon against Glenville State University, losing to the Lady Pioneers 9-4. With a strong wind blowing out to to right center field, a simple fly ball had the chance to get out of the park. And that was just the case with today's contest as the two teams combined for five home runs. The Lady Pioneers took advantage of the long ball with runners on base, sending both of their homers over the fence with runners on base.

The Lightning, who were down 1-0 after the first, waited until the third inning to take advantage of the strong winds when sophomore second baseman Veronica Peters stepped to the plate with fellow sophomore Michelle Foster standing on second base, hit one off the top of the left centerfield wall and bounced over the fence for her first home run of the season. Freshman Samantha Alonzo followed in Peters' footsteps in the 4th with a solo shot, her first homer of the season giving the Lightning the 3-1 lead. The Lady Pioneers responded in their half of the 4th with a 2-run home run of their own tying the game 3-3.

Junior pitcher Ashley Antosh was cruising the first two passes through the Pioneer's lineup, racking up five strikeouts through four innings. In the fifth, the Lady Pioneers batted around, sending 9 players to the plate and scoring six runs in the inning giving Glenville a 9-3 lead. Lightning senior Danielle Rice stepped up the plate in the 6th with no one on base and one out and sent the third pitch of the at-bat over the fence for her first of the season tying Peters and Alonzo for the team lead.

Senior pitcher Sadie Jones who relieved Antosh in the 6th inning retired all four batters she faced all via ground out but the Lightning offense couldn't pull off the comeback and lost by a final count of 9-4.

The lightning return to action this evening at the Salisbury Community Park in Salisbury, North Carolina at 6 P.M. against the University of Massachusetts-Lowell.
