Goldey-Beacom softball recorded its first regular-season victory against cross-town rival Wilmington (DE) since April 12, 2017 in game two of a doubleheader, and marked its first home victory against the rival since April 3, 2014. The Lightning fell 3-1 in game one but rallied for a 3-0 victory in game two.
Game one saw GBC reach home plate first in the second inning on a double to left center from freshman Ayri Hansen (Lakewood, CA) that scored senior Autumn Simpson (Elkton, MD). Wilmington scored the next three runs on a sacrifice fly from Brianna Greenlaw in the fourth inning, an RBI single from Maddie Vollmar in the sixth inning and an RBI double from Haley Grygo in the seventh.
Game two saw the Lightning turn things around right away with all three runs scored in the opening inning. A sacrifice bunt from sophomore Bri Cole (Rising Sun, MD) plated senior Chasedy Johnson (Egg Harbor City, NJ), an RBI from senior Rayna Pelcak (Laurel Springs, NJ) scored junior McKenna Frank (Oxford, PA) and an RBI single from Hansen scored freshman Kelci Gingras (Orem, UT).
Newark, DE sophomore Lauren Carbonara (4-3) was outstanding in tossing a four-hit shutout, facing just six batters above the minimum.
Goldey-Beacom plays next on Saturday, when it faces Bowie State in a 1:00 pm doubleheader at the Jackson Athletic Complex in Wilmington, DE.
