Opening Tip-Off
After extending their win streak to four consecutive games, the Lightning women's basketball team will continue their three-game road trip on Wednesday night when they travel to Molloy College for a non-conference game against the Lions. Opening tip-off at Quealy Gymnasium is slated for 5:30 p.m. and live video of the game can be found by visiting the Lions' official athletics website, www.molloylions.com.
Scouting Molloy
After dropping an 82-60 East Coast Conference setback against St. Thomas Aquinas on Saturday afternoon, the Lions will be trying to snap a three-game losing streak when they host Goldey-Beacom on Wednesday evening. Now 2-4 overall and 0-2 in the ECC, the Lions have not won since an 83-81 victory at Chestnut Hill on Nov. 16. Both of the Lions' wins this year have come against CACC opponents as Molloy also defeated Wilmington by a 90-72 margin on Nov. 11. Senior guard Christina Marra leads four Molloy players who are averaging double figures in scoring with a 12.5 average while contributing 4.5 rebounds per contest. Meanwhile, senior forward Ikema Ross leads the Lions by averaging 9.0 rebounds per game in addition to scoring 8.8 points per outing. Wednesday's game will mark the end of a three-game homestand for the Lions.
Lightning Rout Local Rivals to Extend Win Streak
Led by a season-high 22 points from senior guard Devonne Richardson, the Lightning erupted for a season-high 84 points en route to their fourth consecutive win, an 84-53 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory at Wilmington University on Monday night. The win marked Goldey-Beacom's seventh consecutive victory over its local rival. Richardson also recorded a “double double” for the third straight game to lead the Lightning while senior forward Akilah Sewell matched a season high by scoring 13 points. The Lightning shot a season-high 45.1 per cent from the field, including a 6-for-12 performance from three-point range.
Richardson Honored as CACC Player of the Week
For the second time this season, senior guard Devonne Richardson has been named as the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Player of the Week as announced by the CACC on Monday evening. In leading the Lightning to wins over Georgian Court and Caldwell, the Baltimore, Md. native averaged 16.5 points and 15.0 rebounds per game. She had a season-high 16 rebounds against Caldwell and scored the game-winning field goal with 5.8 seconds left in Goldey-Beacom's 55-53 victory on Saturday.
Post-Game Notes: Wilmington
• The Lightning scored a season-high 84 points in the win over Wilmington on Monday night, marking their highest single-game scoring total since erupting for 88 points in a win over Georgian Court on Jan. 5 of last season.
• In addition, the Lightning made a season-high 45.1 per cent of their field goal attempts against the Wildcats, including a season-best 6-for-12 performance from three-point range. Prior to Monday, the Lightning had not shot over 45 per cent in a game since connecting on 45.1 per cent of their shots in a 64-61 win over Bloomfield College on Feb. 4 of last season.
• The Lightning have now defeated the Wildcats in seven consecutive meetings. Since the start of the 2001-02 season, Goldey-Beacom has won 14 of the 21 meetings between the two teams.
• Freshman guard Monique Cheek scored a season-high nine points and also had a season-high four assists.
• Senior forward Akilah Sewell matched a season high by scoring 13 points against the Wildcats along with eight rebounds.
Too Close for Comfort
Of the Lightning's seven victories this season, five of them have been decided by seven points or less. In addition, the Lightning have won two of their games this year with a field goal in the closing seconds of regulation. On Nov. 12, senior guard Jacinda Jones gave Goldey-Beacom a 67-66 victory at Kutztown with a field goal with two seconds remaining. Senior guard Devonne Richardson scored on a lay-up with 5.8 seconds left in regulation on Saturday afternoon to break a 53-53 tie against Caldwell.
10 Count for Richardson
After recording a game-high 13 rebounds in the Lightning's 84-53 win over Wilmington on Monday night, senior guard Devonne Richardson has posted 10 or more rebounds in each of her last six games. During her current six-game streak, the Baltimore, Md. native has averaged 12.5 rebounds per outing with four “double double” performances. In addition, she has moved into second place on the Lightning's all-time list with 970 career rebounds. Entering Wednesday's game against the Lions, Richardson ranks fourth in the CACC in rebounding with a 10.4 average.
Another Quest for 1,000 for Richardson
Senior guard Devonne Richardson has the opportunity to become the second player in school history to record 1,000 career rebounds this season. After grabbing a game-high 13 rebounds in the Lightning's win at Wilmington on Monday night, the Baltimore, Md. native ranks second in school history with 970 career rebounds and needs 73 rebounds to become the school's all-time leader. With 125 rebounds in 12 games this season, Richardson ranks fourth in the CACC with a 10.4 average.
What's Ahead for Goldey-Beacom
After playing three games in a five-day span, the Lightning will be idle until Wednesday, Dec. 19 when they resume their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference schedule against Chestnut Hill at 12 p.m. It will be the final game in a three-game road trip for the Lightning and be the team's 11th road game in their first 14 outings. The Lightning will return to the Joseph West Jones College Center on Friday, Dec. 28 to host defending NCAA Division II champion Shaw University at 2 p.m.
