The GBC Women's Basketball team used 4 different career high's to roll to victory on Thursday night against Georgian Court College. The 88-52 victory was the largest margin (36) of victory of the season and their 88 points were the most scored since 2009 when GBC recorded 90 against Columbia Union (now Washington Adventist).
Taylor Leanord,
Melanie Johnson,
Tanjae Lewis and
Monica Burch all recorded career high nights for the Lightning, providing 36 points to the victory. Redshirt Freshman Taylor Leanord went 3-3 from the 3 point line for 9 points and
Melanie Johnson went 3-5 from distance to give herself 9 points as well. The freshman duo from Sterling High school combined for 18 points with
Monica Burch leading the way with 10 and
Tanjae Lewis contributing 8 points in 15 minutes of action. The Lightning's bench scored 38 points in the victory, the most all season.
Georgian Court used a slow start for the Lightning to jump out to a 4-0 lead early in the contest. With help from a time-out at the 15:12 mark, GBC unleashed a powerful 39-10 rush to close out the half. In those 15 minutes, GBC forced the Lions into 22 turnovers and helped them to shoot just 16% from the field.
GBC got out to a much quicker start in the 2
nd half as Taylor Leanord came out hot knocking down her 3 threes of the game within the 1
st 4 minutes while extending the Lightning lead to 36. Goldey-Beacom led by as many as 48 in the contest while holding the Lions to just over 28% from the field. The Lightning were 7-11 from 3 point line for the game, the most makes they have had all season from deep.
Leading the scoring for the Lightning was
Devonne Richardson with 16 points and
Ashley Rosario with 15. With balanced scoring across the board, GBC was able to rack up 20 assists on 32 field goals. With the victory, the Lighting bump up their record to 9-4 overall and 4-2 in conference. They travel up to Felician College on Saturday, January 7 in a CACC matchup.
