NEWARK, Del. – The Goldey-Beacom College golf team took ninth place at the two-round, 10-team Dr. Edwin B. Cottrell Invite, hosted by West Chester University at Penn Oaks Golf Club on Apr. 3-4.
The Lightning finished with a 666 (337, 329) overall team score on the par-71, 6,644-yard course. They finished one stroke back of eighth-place Millersville (665) and just four strokes back pf California University of Pa. (662).
GBC senior Wes Hood was the Lightning's top-finisher with a two-round score of 162 (81, 81) to finish in a five-way tie for 17th place. Freshman Justin Lesko finished in a four-way tie for 30th with a 167.
Sophomore Michael Coppa was next for Goldey-Beacom, tying three other golfers for 35th place with a score of 169, and sophomore transfer Jeff Whiteside was close behind, finishing with a 171 to tie for 41st place.
Devon Ripley, another sophomore who, along with Coppa, tied for second-place overall last week at the GBC Spring Invitational, came in a tie for 45th place by shooting a 173.
Indiana University of Pa. and the host West Chester tied for first in the team standings with an overall score of 616. IUP, which was down three strokes after round one, shot the lowest round of the tournament, a 302, in round two to force the tie.
Clarion University (629), Gannon University (644) and Le Moyne College (654) were the other top-five schools, respectively. Mercyhurst College (656), California U. of Pa., Millersville, and Goldey-Beacom rounded out the scoring.
The Lightning will compete in the Philadelphia University Invitational on Sat., Apr. 9 for one final tune-up before the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Championship Tournament on Mon. and Tues., Apr. 11-12.
