ORANGEBURG, N.Y. – The Goldey-Beacom College softball team came up just short in both ends of its doubleheader at Dominican, falling 3-2 and 3-1 to the sixth ranked team in the East Region on Sat. afternoon at the Dominican College Softball Field.
With the two losses, the Lightning fell to 17-21 overall and 8-18 in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference to end the season while Dominican improved to 29-15 overall and 19-7 in league play.
Game 1:
DC took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning as Shelby Wassman and Ashley Martinez got back-to-back singles to put two runners on. Kathryn Coles sacrificed both runners with a bunt, and pitcher Delaney Childers hit a key two-run double to help her cause.
The Lightning got on the board with a run in the sixth inning when junior Shannon Graves ripped an RBI double scoring sophomore Ashley Antosh.
But the Chargers got that run back with another extra-base hit, an RBI double by Julie Plante, and they regained a two run advantage, 3-1.
GBC, looking for its first victory over DC since 2006, tried to rally in the top of the seventh beginning with a leadoff single by junior Danie Rice.
Lightning Head coach Bill Streets put senior Jackie Waddle in to pinch run, and Waddle advanced to third on a double by junior Cailin Cavanaugh. Following Cavanaugh's double, freshman Ashley Zaccaria walked to load the bases with still no outs.
With junior Jordan Waterloo at the plate, a botched offensive play resulted in Waddle trying to steal home, but she was tagged out by Dominican catcher, Ashley Corrao at the plate for the first out. Cavanaugh and Zaccaria each moved up a base on the play.
Waterloo then hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Cavanaugh and bring the Lightning within a run at 3-2, with the tying run, Zaccaria, on second. But sophomore Angelina Myers would ground out to shortstop for the final out as the Lightning fell just short.
Senior Heather Draper, the third winningest pitcher in school history, took the loss in her last-ever appearance in Lightning blue and gold. She allowed three earned runs on seven hits and six walks as she ended the season with a record of 7-7.
This marked the 13th game the Lightning played in this season that was decided by one run. In those games, GBC was 5-8.

Game 2:
Sophomore Leanne Miller tossed two scoreless innings and the Lightning struck first for a run in the top of the third inning to give the Lightning a 1-0 advantage.
Sophomore Erin Poffenberger drew a one-out walk and reached second safely on junior Dana Walker's fielder's choice bunt. Freshman Michelle Foster singled to right field to load the bases with no outs as Zaccaria came up to bat.
Zaccaria would reach on an error while all three baserunners advanced, including Poffenberger from third, who scored the first run of the game.
Back-to-back Charger singles with one out, and then a wild pitch by Miller with two outs, would allow Dominican to tie the game at one apiece in the bottom of the third inning.
Dominican added two runs on three hits in the bottom of the fifth inning. Corrao and Wassman hit back-to-back RBI singles to give the Chargers a 3-1 lead that would stand for the rest of the game.
The Lightning could only manage two hits and three base-runners after the third inning as they failed to add any more runs. Rice reached on an infield error in the top of the fourth, then collected her 106th career hit in the top of the sixth which ties her with Tiffany Frick ('05) for sixth on the school's all-time list.
Miller (3-9) allowed three earned runs on six hits and two walks while striking out four in six innings of work.
This doubleheader concluded the 2011 season for the Lightning. GBC will return 15 of the 17 players on this year's roster in 2012, including eight seniors.
