PIKE CREEK, Del. – The Goldey-Beacom College softball team was swept in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader on Wed. afternoon against second-place Georgian Court University by scores of 5-0 and 7-4.
The Lightning (17-19, 8-16 CACC) were shut out for the first time this season in game one, and the Lions (25-19, 17-5) overcame a 4-3 deficit by scoring four unanswered runs to complete the sweep in game two.
GBC, still hoping to vie for the eighth and final spot in the CACC Tournament, has two more games left – a doubleheader at Dominican College on Sat., Apr. 30.
Game 1:
Diana Sansevera (10-4) crafted a two-hit, one walk masterpiece in the opener as she struck out nine batters in a complete-game effort. She dropped her ERA to 1.83 while winning her sixth straight decision.
Meanwhile, Georgian Court clubbed 13 hits in the contest, led by Sammie Joe Garofalo's 3-for-4 effort at the plate which included a double, run and RBI. Jessica Comiskey (2-for-4), Melissa DePalma (2-for-2) and Christine Masitti (2-for-2, RBI) each enjoyed multi-hit performances as well.
Sophomore Leanne Miller took the loss as she went all seven innings and allowed five runs (two earned).
The Lions scored one run in the third, two in the fourth, and one in the fifth and sixth to claim the 5-0 victory.
Game 2:
Georgian Court jumped out to an early 2-0 in the top of the firstcourtesy of an RBI triple by Rachel Ruch and an RBI groundout by Kelsey Cutler.
This time, Goldey-Beacom answered right back with two runs in its half of the inning. Junior Shannon Graves doubled to left field to score Michelle Foster, who had led off with a single. Then, Rice's base-hit to left-center field scored Graves to tie the score at two apiece.
Garofolo led off the top of the second inning with a single up the middle, and Courtney Cuevas moved her over to second with a sacrifice bunt. Lightning starting pitcher Heather Draper got DePalma to ground out back to the mound, but Garofolo was able to advance to third on the play.
Next up was Masitti, who drew a two-out walk to put runners on the corners. Masitti then stole second base, and an errant throw by GBC catcher Danie Rice allowed Garofolo to score. GBC left fielder, freshman Michelle Foster, alertly picked up the ball after Rice's throw sailed into the outfield, and threw Masitti out at third for the final out of the inning.
But back came the Lightning in the bottom of the third inning, taking their first lead of the game, 4-3 after a four-hit, two-run rally. Foster, batting in the lead-off spot in this game, drew a walk to start the inning.
The next batter, Graves, earned a bunt single and advanced to second as the Lions threw out Foster trying to go to third base. Graves came around to score on an RBI single down the right field line by freshman Roni Peters, and Peters would move up to second base on the throw to the plate.
Rice was up next, and she singled to center field to score Peters for the second run of the inning as the Lightning took the lead. The Lightning got one more hit in the inning by freshman Ashley Zaccaria, but Draper struck out with two runners on to end the inning.
That would be all the scoring GBC could muster as the Lightning bats went silent for the rest of the game. Meanwhile, GCU opened up a 7-4 advantage with a three-run top of the fourth inning. Masitti knocked in a run with a single up the middle and Ruch plated two runs with a single to center field.
Draper would take the loss as she allowed six runs (five earned) on seven hits and three walks in 4.1 innings of work. Junior Sadie Jones came on to pitch the final 2.2 innings, and she allowed just one unearned run on one hit and two walks while striking out two.
The Lightning loaded the bases in the bottom of the fourth with a fielder's choice and two walks, but left all three runners stranded. They would leave two runners stranded in the sixth and one in the seventh as well. All totaled, GBC had 10 runners left on base as they out-hit GCU 12-8 in game two.
Georgian Court's Shannon Dukes (11-5) picked up the win as she allowed four earned runs on 11 hits and three walks while striking out three in 5.1 innings pitched. Brooke Hull earned the save as she allowed no runs on one hit in 1.2 innings of work.
