DRACUT, Mass. – The Goldey-Beacom College golf team, led by sophomore Devon Ripley (159, T-8th), finished in third place with an overall team score of 643 in the two-round, par-71 River Hawk Invitational hosted by UMass Lowell at Meadow Creek Golf Course.
The Lightning improved by nine strokes (326, 317) from the first to second round as they surpassed Bentley (323, 331 - 654) and Assumption (320, 335 - 655) who were both ahead after day one. West Chester, who was three strokes back of GBC after day one, shot the low team-round score of the tournament, a 307, to beat out the Lightning for second place with a two-round score of 636. American International College took first place with a final score of 624 (313, 311).
Division I Manhattan College was seven strokes back of GBC for fourth place with a 650, and Bentley rounded out the top-five with a 654.
Ripley's 159 (80, 79) was good enough to tie for eighth place with Manhattan's Chris Calabro, who's second round score of 73 was the lowest round of the tournament.
Senior Wes Hood tied for 12th with a 161 (85, 76), and freshman Bryan Neuhaus shot a 162 (80, 82) to tie for 14th place as GBC had three individuals place in the top-15.
Sophomore Michael Coppa was in a four-way tie for 32nd with a 169 (89, 80) and sophomore transfer Jeff Whiteside took 44th with a 173 (81, 92).
This completes the regular season for the Lightning golf team. Head coach John Asbell and the GBC squad will now wait to hear if they are selected for the NCAA East Regional Tournament.
