NYACK, N.Y. – The Goldey-Beacom College softball team saw its 2-0 lead disappear as the Lightning fell to host Nyack, 6-3 in game one, but after getting another early 2-0 lead in game two, they put the Warriors away by a final count of 4-2 for a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader split on Fri. afternoon at Hilltop Field.
Sophomore right-hander Leanne Miller (3-5) earned the complete game victory for GBC in game two as she allowed just two earned runs on six hits and zero walks through all seven innings. Game one starter, sophomore Sadie Jones was solid in a losing effort, allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits and one walk while striking out three.
Junior Danie Rice collected four hits on the day (two in each game) while junior Cailin Cavanaugh had three hits (all in game two) to lead the Lightning offensively for the day.
Game 1:
Jones allowed just two hits through three scoreless innings while the Lightning put two runs on the board via a two-RBI single by freshman Michelle Foster in the top of the third frame. GBC led 2-0 at the end of the third inning.
Nyack got those runs back in the bottom of the fourth, cashing in on a Lightning outfield error to lead off the inning. Later, Kathleen McClain's double to right field would score two runs and force a 2-2 tie.
After a silent top of the fifth by the Lightning bats, the Warriors opened up a 5-2 lead in the bottom of the frame with a three-run rally.
Another Lightning outfield error in that bottom of fifth allowed the Warrirors' leadoff hitter on base, and Nyack's Jackie Gonzalez followed with a single up the middle. With runners at first and second and nobody out, GBC head coach Bill Streets called in junior reliever Shannon O'Hara to try to get the Lightning out of the jam.
O'Hara struggled with her control as she gave three batters a free-pass via two hit-by-pitches and one base-on-balls. She gave up just one hit in the inning, but three runs scored before she struck out Natasha Brown with the bases loaded to stop the bleeding.
GBC was poised to get some of those runs back in the top of the sixth as freshman Roni Peters and Rice were both aboard to start the potential rally. After junior Jordan Waterloo flied out to left field for the first out, O'Hara drew a walk, and the Lightning had the bases loaded with just one out. But no runners would score as Nyack's Kia Jelley put senior Jackie Waddle and sophomore Angelina Myers both down on strikes to end the threat.
The Warriors added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth thanks to the third Lightning error of the day. The error in the infield allowed Bethany Reed to reach base and Tesla Murillo to score from third before O'Hara could retire the next two batters, consecutively, to end the inning. Nyack led 6-2 as the Lightning came up for their final at-bat.
Junior Shannon Graves walked to lead off the top of the seventh and then stole second base. Graves is now 10-for-11 in stolen base attempts this season.
A sacrifice bunt by Foster allowed Graves to advance to third, and a sacrifice fly by junior Cailin Cavanaugh allowed Graves to score. That would be all the damage the Lightning could do that inning though, as Jelley got Peters to pop up to first base to end the game, and Nyack took game one by a score of 6-3.
Game 2:
After a scoreless first inning, the Lightning struck quickly in the top of the second to again take an early 2-0 lead.
Rice was the catalyst as she led-off for GBC with a double to left field, and came around to score on a double by the next batter, O'Hara, for the first run. O'Hara would advance to third on a single by Cavanaugh, then come home on a passed ball for run number two.
The Lightning added a run in the top of the fourth inning courtesy of an RBI single by Angelina Myers which scored Cavanaugh from third. They led 3-0 heading into the bottom of the fourth inning.
Miller had a shutout through three innings, but surrendered a solo homerun to Reed with one out in the bottom of the fourth to make the score, 3-1.
In the top of the fifth inning, Peters led off for the Lightning with a double and advanced to third on an error by the Nyack outfielder. This was the fifth double of the game by GBC.
Peters later came around to score on an RBI single by Cavanaugh, which extended the Lightning lead back to three, 4-1.
Helped by two more Lightning errors, Nyack pushed across one more run in the bottom of the sixth to make the score, 4-2, and that would ultimately be the final score of the game.
