PIKE CREEK, Del. – The Goldey-Beacom College softball team clobbered Washington Adventist by scores of 8-0 and 19-0 in a doubleheader sweep on Sun. afternoon at Nancy Churchman-Sawin Field.
The Lightning (13-9) bounced back in a big way after being swept yesterday by conference foe, Post University, as they out-hit the Shock 24-6 in two shutout wins.
Starting pitcher freshman Roni Peters (2-1) picked up the win in game one as she tossed 5.0 innings and allowed no runs on three hits and two walks while striking out four. Sophomore Ashley Antosh, who was celebrating her 20th birthday, pitched the final inning and recorded all three outs.
Senior Heather Draper (4-3) earned a complete game (five inning) shutout victory in game two as she allowed just three hits, walked none and struck out five. Draper had plenty of run support as the Lightning opened up a 9-0 lead after two innings and kept pouring it on in the third and fourth before the game was called after the top half of the fifth.
Game 1:
The top three Shock batters all grounded out to the mound as Peters made it through the first inning untouched.
Peters then helped her own cause at the plate by driving in Foster from second base on an RBI single to left field. Later, she and Waterloo would come around on a 2-RBI triple by junior Cailin Cavanaugh, and just like that the Lightning led, 3-0.
Washington Adventist's Jourdan Harmon singled to left field to lead off the top of the second and later advanced to second on a balk by Peters. The next batter, Margaret Douglas drew a walk before Peters struck out Lauren Decker, looking, for the second out.
With two outs, Courtney Capers ripped a single up the middle, but well-executed relay throws from Cavanaugh in center field to shortstop Angelina Myers, and Myers to junior catcher Danie Rice, resulted in Harmon being tagged out by Rice at the plate to end the threat.
In the bottom of the second, Myers got aboard via a one-out walk, and she came around to score on a sacrifice fly by junior Jordan Waterloo to extend the Lightning lead to 4-0.
While Peters allowed just one hit during scoreless third, fourth and fifth innings, the Lightning added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth to make it 6-0. Rice doubled to left field to score Cavanaugh, and Waddle hit a loop single to right field for an RBI single, scoring pinch runner, Leanne Miller during that fifth frame.
Sophomore birthday girl Ashley Antosh came on to pitch for GBC in the sixth inning. The first batter she faced, Kelsey Wright, reached on an infield error and then advanced to second on a wild pitch. A sacrifice bunt by Erin Wright, moved Kelsey over to third, but Antosh retired the next two batters to end the inning.
Junior Shannon Graves led off the bottom of the sixth with a bunt single, then stole second base. She is now 9-for-10 on the season in stolen base attempts.
Foster belted her third hit of the game to left field, and then Waterloo drove an outside pitch to right field which scored Graves and moved Foster to third.
Next up for the Lightning was Antosh, who smacked a base-hit up the middle to score Foster and give the Lightning the decisive eighth run to end the game via the mercy rule.
Game 2:
The Lightning scored early and often in game two while starting pitcher Heather Draper shut down the Shock through five scoreless innings.
In the bottom of the first, GBC scored two runs on two hits but left the bases loaded when Myers' ground ball to the shortstop resulted in a force out at third.
Draper cruised through the top of the second, and the Lightning blew the game open with a seven-run rally in the bottom half of the inning.
GBC showed great patience at the plate, drawing four walks and one hit-by-pitch to go with four hits, one of which was a two-RBI single by Miller, who came in to pinch hit. Sophomore catcher Erin Poffenberger came up to bat twice in the inning and earned a base-on-balls both times. Also, Peters smoked a two-RBI single down the left field line during the rally as well.
Draper allowed two consecutive two-out hits in the top of the third, but got Meagan Hess to ground out to Peters for the unassisted putout at third base to end the threat and preserve the shutout.
Cavanaugh doubled and drove in two runs in the Lightning third inning, and then scored on an RBI single by junior Shannon O'Hara. An error would allow O'Hara to come around and score for the fourth run of the inning, and the Lightning led 13-0 at the end of the third inning.
The Lightning continued to pour it on in the fourth, scoring six runs on four hits and taking advantage of two Shock errors. Junior Sadie Jones earned her first hit of the season, a single to center field, and came around to score on Cavanaugh's second double of the game. O'Hara also doubled to score two runs in the inning.
Gina Urban got just the third hit of the game by the Shock with two outs in in the top of the fifth, but Draper got Kelsey Wright to ground out to Rice at third base for the final out of the game. The mercy rule went into effect as the Lightning earned the doubleheader sweep.
The win for Draper was the 19th of her Lightning career as she looks to become just the third GBC pitcher with 20 or more career wins.
