NEWARK, Del. – The host Goldey-Beacom College golf team took first place at the two-round, 10-team GBC Spring Invitational at Deerfield Golf Club on Mar. 28-29.
The Lightning blew away the competition with a 622 (311, 311) overall team score on the par-70, 6,323-yard course. They finished 14 strokes ahead of second-place Nyack (636).
GBC senior Wes Hood was the individual champion with a two-round score of 149 (74, 75), and sophomores Devon Ripley and Michael Coppa, Jr. finished in a three-way tie with Adelphi's Stuart Pulkinen for second place at 153.
Jeff Whiteside, a sophomore transfer from Wilmington University, was the fourth Lightning player to place in the top-10 individually, as he improved six strokes in the second round to finish in a three-way tie for seventh place with a 156.
Freshmen Bryan Neuhaus and Justin Lesko were among five players tied for 25th place with a 164. Lesko shot the best round of the tournament, a 72, in round one. He was just two shots over par at the end of the first day.
Other GBC finishers were freshmen Matt Japchen (T-30th,165), Pat McRae (T-39th, 170) and seniors Erik Tammsalu (49th, 176) and John Marstellar (51st, 180).
Nyack, a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference team, improved 10 strokes from round one to round two (323, 313) in placing second with a 636. Millersville, which was just six strokes back of Goldey-Beacom for the lead after day one with a 317, shot a 321 in round two and finished in third with a 638. Adelphi (645) and Le Moyne (647) rounded out the top five.
UMass Lowell (654), West Chester (655), Pace (685), Holy Family (689) and Dominican (700) rounded out the scoring.
The Lightning will look to solidify their place in the NCAA East Regional with a good showing next weekend at the Dr. Edwin B. Cottrell Invitational hosted by West Chester.
