PIKE CREEK, Del. - The Goldey-Beacom College women's basketball team struggled to find its offensive rythm as the host Lightning suffered a 66-52 defeat against Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference foe Dominican on Sat. afternoon.
The Lighting, which held a 45-33 rebounding advantage for the day, could not overcome 28-percent field goal shooting and 20 turnovers, as they fell to 6-4 overall and 2-2 in league play. Meanwhile, the Chargers shot 47-percent from the field to improve to 4-4 overall and a perfect 4-0 in the conference.
Junior guard
Ashley Rosario led the Lightning with team-highs of 12 points and seven rebounds. Junior forwards
Akilah Sewell and
Irene Hudson scored eight points apiece and freshman guard
Monica Burch turned in four points, seven rebounds and a team-high five assists.
Dominican found ways to score inside-and-out, as guard Lindsey Lopez turned in 18 points on 6-of-13 shooting (including 5-of-9 from long-range) and seven assists, and forward Bianca Harris matched on 8-of-14 FG shooting to go with eight rebounds.
The Chargers raced out to a 10-1 lead with a little over three minutes gone by in the first half. They extended that lead to 18-7 at the 10:31 mark before redshirt-freshman guard
Taylor Leonard's three-pointer sparked an 11-3 Lightning surge to cut the deficit to three with 6:49 left before the break. Later, a Rosario layup pulled GBC within 23-21 at the 5:07 mark, but Dominican closed out the half on a 10-1 run to take a 33-22 lead into the intermission.
With a little over five minutes gone by in the second half, the Chargers had extended their lead to 47-30, and the Lightning could not get any close than 11 the rest of the way, as they fell by a final score of 66-52.
The Lightning have over a week to rest before their next game on Sun., Dec. 18. They will host non-conference foe, Lock Haven University at 2 p.m.
