PIKE CREEK, Del. – Shippensburg's Miles Harriger broke a scoreless tie nearly 10 minutes into the second half, and the Goldey-Beacom College men's soccer team could not muster an equalizer as the Lightning fell to 0-3 on the season with a 1-0 loss in the season home opener at Nancy Churchman-Sawin Field.
Sophomore goalkeeper Ignacio Farias (0-3) played the whole 90 minutes for GBC and made six stops while allowing one goal. Shippensburg's Andrew Foran made two stops for the shutout victory.
The Lightning nearly struck just minutes into the action when a pretty ball played by junior Carlos Bastardo found the feet of junior forward Erlin Rodezno running down the near sideline. Rodezno ripped a shot across the net, but a diving Foran was up to the task as he batted the ball away.
Shippensburg had its chances in the first half as well, particularly during one scrum right in front of the net after the ball was played into the box on a corner kick. Farias was able to find the ball in a crowd and gather it in to his body.
But at the 54:41 mark, Harriger beat Farias on a direct kick from about 25 yards out, which proved to be the gamewinner.
Junior midfielder Kwame Appiah, who led the Lightning with four shots on the day, had an opportunity to score, but with no angle to shoot from the right side of the field, he sent the ball wide left and the ball rolled out of bounds. Shippensburg was then able to melt the clock on a goal kick.
The Lightning, still seeking their first win of the season, begin conference play on Sat. with a visit to Dominican College. The Chargers are ranked No. 10 in the latest East Region poll according to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA). Kickoff is at 2:30 p.m.
