PIKE CREEK, Del. – The Goldey-Beacom College volleyball team improved to 3-1 on the season with a dominating 3-0 sweep of Lincoln in non-league play Tues. night at the Joseph West Jones Center. The Lightning won in straight sets, 25-18, 25-11, 25-11.
Freshman Tyla Wells and junior Roni Shaner led the Lightning with five kills apiece, while sophomore setter Monica Dempsey directed the offense with 15 assists and a team-high five service aces. Senior defensive specialist A.J. Hicks led GBC defensively with eight digs.
The Lightning took advantage of 25 Lion errors over the course of the match as they held Lincoln to a hitting percentage of -.098. Meanwhile, GBC hit .206 as a team with junior Rebecca Stoffer (four kills, two aces, one solo block) leading the team with a .444 hitting percentage.
Sophomore Catherine Howard, who had a career-high five blocks in the Lightning's 3-1 win over Lincoln on Sept. 1, 2009, had a big presence again tonight for GBC with three solo blocks.
Goldey-Beacom is now off for a week before it begins its Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference schedule with a meeting on the road against Holy Family on Sept. 14 at 7 p.m. The Lightning were picked to finish sixth in the CACC South Division this year. Holy Family, which finished 11-8 in the conference last year, was picked to finish third.
