WEST CHESTER, Pa. – The Goldey-Beacom College men's soccer team was in position to tie the game at two apiece for the majority of the second half, but a late flurry of Golden Rams goals led to a 5-1 losing verdict on Sat. afternoon in the Lightning's season opener at West Chester.

The Lightning (0-1) have now lost 10 of their last 11 season-openers, including nine straight on the road. West Chester (1-0) has won the last seven meetings between the two schools.

West Chester's Conor Malarney opened the scoring for the day with the first of his two goals in the 38th minute, but Lightning freshman midfielder Andre Jank responded less than two minutes later with a goal off an assist from senior Mike Sager to even the score at one apiece.

However, Malarney would shift the momentum back to West Chester two and a half minutes after Jank's goal when he headed in an assist from Peter Mals for his second goal of the half to put the Rams up 2-1 with under a minute left to play before intermission.

The Rams would outshoot GBC 7-4 in the second half (11-7 for the game) and take five corner kicks to zero by the Lightning. Still, the score remained 2-1 until the 80th minute of play when WCU's Kyle Miller ended the scoring drought with a goal at the 80:16 mark.

Ricky Williamson (penalty kick goal) and Kevin MacCann each tallied goals for West Chester at 83:05 and 83:59, respectively as the Golden Rams went on to hand the Lightning a 5-1 loss.

GBC is back in action tomorrow at 12 p.m. for the second of its games in the West Chester Tournament against Mercy College. Mercy, a member of the East Coast Conference, defeated the No. 15 ranked team in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America preseason poll, Wilmington University by a score of 3-0 this afternoon.
