PIKE CREEK, Del. – After nearly 80 minutes of scoreless play and several good scoring chances for both sides, Caldwell scored twice in a six-minute span to earn a 2-0 victory over the host Goldey-Beacom College women's soccer team in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play Sat. afternoon.
The Lightning fell to 0-6-1 overall and 0-4-1 in league play while the Cougars improved to 4-3 on the season and 3-2 in the CACC.
Rebecca Stinger put Caldwell on the board in the 79th minute when she dribbled around a defender and struck a shot from just outside the 18 past Lightning goalkeeper Alyssa Vetrano. Julie Crankshaw added an insurance goal exactly six minutes later off an assist from Lauren Hoenig to put the Cougars up 2-0 to stay.
Caldwell owned a 15-11 advantage in shots and an 8-3 advantage in corner kicks. The Cougars took six of their eight corners in the second half.
GBC equaled Caldwell with eight shots in the second half and had several good looks at the goal, with forward Kelly Williams (three shots, one on goal) and midfielder Marissa Valladares (three shots, two on goal) very active on the offensive end. Juniors Felicia Justice and Ashley Longo also added two shots apiece.
Vetrano (0-5-1) played the full 90 minutes and made four saves while allowing two goals in the loss. Lauren Hoenig earned a complete game shutout with five saves.
