Women’s Soccer Clinches CACC Tournament Spot Despite 5-1 Loss at Bridgeport

Goldey-Beacom was handed a 5-1 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference loss at Bridgeport in Bridgeport, CT, but found out afterward it clinched a spot in the conference tournament.

Bridgeport (10-2-5, 9-1-1 CACC) opened the scoring in the fourth minute when Keli Zavatsky took a corner kick from Mia DiPronio and buried one.  Jana Mueller made it 2-0 in the 11th minute when she had the ball the in box, broke loose from a defender and scored.  Chloe Oudin took advantage of a GBC misplay in the 21st minute and banged one home for a 3-0 margin.

The Lightning got one back in the 27th minute for a 3-1 deficit.  Junior Ella Badra (Caracas, Venezuela) fed a great long ball to senior Miley Jones (Pemberton, NJ), who outran the defense and scored inside the right post for her seventh goal of the year, fourth in the last five games and 11th career.

Manuela Macedo tallied in the 82nd minute and Ayse Ataol scored in the 87th minute for the final.

Jones ended with three shots and sophomore Maria Empadinhas (Cascais, Portugal) made seven saves for the Lightning.

Goldey-Beacom (5-9-2, 4-4-2) now is in sixth place in the CACC with one game remaining before competing in the CACC Tournament a second straight year.

Goldey-Beacom on Wednesday hosts Chestnut Hill at 3:00 pm.  A GBC win will give it the number five seed.  A loss or tie means it either will be the sixth, seventh or eighth seed.
