PIKE CREEK, Del. – Sophomore Ricky Jackson's goal in the 81st minute gave the Goldey-Beacom College men's soccer team its first win of the season as the Lightning beat visiting Caldwell, 2-1 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference action Sat. at Nancy Churchman-Sawin Field.
GBC improved to 1-7 overall and 1-4 in conference play while Caldwell fell to 2-6 overall and 1-4 in league play.
Jackson, who subbed in multiple times throughout the game, re-entered the game in the 72nd minute at forward. The Lightning were slowly moving the ball up the field when suddenly a pass found junior midfielder Rob Cann's feet in the middle of the field in open space. With time, Cann turned and played a perfect ball across to the far side of the field to a streaking Jackson, who then beat his defender and poked a shot past Caldwell goalkeeper John Londono for the winning goal.
The goal was Jackson's first of the season, as today was his first real game-action of the season having sat out the first seven games with an injury.
A very even game statistically, both teams recorded 14 shots with GBC holding a slight 5-4 edge in shots on goal. Both goalkeepers made three saves, but it was sophomore Ignacio Farias (1-7) who earned the win by allowing just one goal for the afternoon.
Senior Erlin Rodezno led Goldey-Beacom with four shots (one on goal) and Cann pitched in with three (one on goal). Sophomore defender Matt Bik scored the Lightning's other goal on a penalty kick just before the eight minute mark.
With Bik's early goal, the Lightning took a 1-0 lead into halftime even though Caldwell owned a 7-5 lead in shots and 4-1 advantage in corner kicks.
The Cougars quickly tied the score in the second half when Mosiah White found the net on a shot off a pass from Sudip Ghimire.
GBC went back on attack after White's goal, outshooting Caldwell 9-7 in the second period before Jackson eventually broke the tie with under 10 minutes left to play.
The Lightning are back in action on Mon. afternoon to host a non-league game against Washington Adventist at 3:30 p.m.
