Lions Roar Past Lightning in Softball Doubleheader

Senior Kim Narkiewicz came on to pinch run for the Lightning in the top of the fifth inning and scored the lone GBC run of the doubleheader.

LAKEWOOD, N.J. – The Goldey-Beacom College softball team was swept in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader on the road Wed. afternoon against the third-ranked team in the East Region, Georgian Court. The Lions won both games by scores of 9-1 (six innings) and 15-0 (five innings).
The Lightning, who last took a game from this perennial CACC power back in 2006, fell to 12-10 (6-7 CACC) on the season. GCU, the defending conference champions, improved to 23-7 overall and 10-2 in league play.
Game 1: GCU 9, GBC 1 (6)
The Lightning committed a season-high five errors in the field and were out-hit 13-3 on the afternoon as they suffered a lopsided, eight-run rule loss in the first game.
Sophomore lefthander Sadie Jones took the loss, allowing five runs (just two earned) on seven hits and one walk. Freshman Tori Anne Davies came on in relief and pitched 1.2 innings before the game was stopped on account of the eight-run deficit. She allowed six hits and four runs (three earned) while striking out two.
Sophomore designated hitter Shannon Graves drove in the Lightning's only run of the game in the top of the fifth inning on a sacrifice bunt to score the pinch runner, senior Kim Narkiewicz from third.
The Lions scored two runs in the first inning, three in the fourth, and two in both the fifth and sixth innings to give them the 9-1 win. They were led offensively by catcher Donne Brossoie who had a game-high four hits and two RBI's. Second baseman Sammie Jo Garofolo, designated hitter Brooke Hull and shortstop Jen Tartaglia each collected two hits for GCU.
Game 2: GCU 15, GBC 0
GCU's Brooke Hull ruled the day as she pitched five shutout innings and clobbered two homeruns (one a grand slam) to help her cause with eight RBI's.
The Lions scored 11 runs in the first inning and never looked back. The game was called off after the top of the fifth inning in accordance with the eight-run rule.
Senior Lauren Witzke and sophomore Danielle Rice each had a hit for GBC.

GBC will try to bounce back tomorrow, Apr. 8 when the Lightning host Lincoln University in a non-conference game at Nancy Churchman-Sawin Field.
