WEST CHESTER, Pa. – Freshman Michael Coppa, Jr. finished second individually in a field of over 50 golfers, helping the Goldey-Beacom College golf team to a tie for sixth-place in the Edwin B. Cottrell Invitational hosted by West Chester University at Penn Oaks Golf Club on Apr. 4-5.
Coppa Jr. forced a sudden-death playoff round with the defending Division II individual national champion, Gavin Smith when the two were tied with a 148 after two rounds of golf. The senior, Smith, outlasted Coppa when he birdied the final sudden-death hole.
Indiana University of Pennsylvania took first place with an overall team score of 600 on the 6,644-yard, par-71 course.
Wilmington and Clarion placed second and third with scores of 614 and 624, respectively. West Chester and Millersville followed for fourth and fifth place with scores of 631 and 636, while GBC and Mercyhurst tied for sixth at 642. LeMoyne (8th, 645), Pace (9th, 667) and a second West Chester (10th, 674) rounded out the scoring.
Also for GBC, Junior Wes Hood tied for 28th place with a 162, followed by reigning Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference golfer of the week, freshman Devon Ripley, at 167 and senior Matt Quigley at 168.
The Lightning are back in action on Mon., Apr. 12 when they begin the CACC Championships hosted by Post University.
