Spirited Lightning Squad Nearly Upsets Dominican in Nightcap, Upended 6-0 in Game One

Senior catcher Lauren Witzke went 3-for-4 at the plate in her final game at GBC. She finished her two-year career with 95 hits.

PIKE CREEK, Del. – After a 6-0 loss in game one, the Goldey-Beacom College softball team did all it could to send seniors Kim Narkiewicz and Lauren Witzke off with a victory in the nightcap at Nancy Churchman-Sawin Field Sat. afternoon, but the Lightning came up one run short, falling 6-5 to the No. 8 ranked team in the East Region, Dominican College.
The Lightning fell to 16-23 overall and 8-18 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play, while Dominican, tops in the conference standings, improved to 30-12 overall and 20-2 in league play.
Dominican broke open a scoreless game with two runs in the third inning of game one as catcher Nicole Scarillohit a two-run double to take a 2-0 lead. The Chargers added two more runs in their half of the fourth inning as senior Cara Piasekci hit an RBI double and Scarillo followed with an RBI single to extend the lead to 4-0.  

An RBI double by Danielle Garrisonand an RBI single by Jessica Martinieriin the top of the seventh put Dominican ahead for what would be the final score of 6-0.

In game two, Dominican held a 2-1 advantage after one full inning as Julie Planteled off the game by reaching pass on a Lightning error and would later score on a passed ball.  Piasecki collected her 200th career hit later in the inning with an RBI single.

A four-run third inning put DC ahead 6-1 as back-to-back triples with two outs by Deidre Jeppson and Martinieri each platted two runs.  

GBC answered back with their own four-run inning in the bottom of the fourth, taking advantage of two Lady Charger errors to cut the deficit to the final 6-5 score.
