PIKE CREEK, Del. – Freshman Angelina Myers' walk-off double scoring sophomore Cailin Cavanaugh lifted the Goldey-Beacom College softball team to a 3-2 victory in game one, and freshman Leanne Miller tossed a complete game shut-out for a 5-0 Lightning victory in game two as GBC snapped an 11-game losing streak with a sweep of Nyack College in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play Tues. afternoon at Nancy Churchman-Sawin Athletic Field.
The Lightning improved to 16-21 overall and 8-16 in league play while Nyack fell to 2-31 (0-22 CACC).
Game 1: GBC 3, Nyack 2
The winless Warriors looked eager to capture their first CACC victory early on when they took advantage of two Lightning errors in the top of the first inning to seize an early 1-0 lead. Christina Braziel's sacrifice fly scored leadoff batter Victoria Leonard who had reached on an infield error and advanced to third on another error.
Nyack starting pitcher Sarah Bolles cruised through the first six innings, allowing just six hits and three walks as she held GBC scoreless until the final inning. In the meantime, the Warriors added another run to their lead in the top of the sixth.
But in the bottom of the seventh, the Lightning showed some urgency and quickly struck for three runs to win the game.
Sophomore third baseman Jordan Waterloo led off the inning with a base-hit to left field. Head coach Jerry Grasso then substituted freshman Ashley Antosh to pinch hit for pitcher Sadie Jones, and Antosh came through with a single up the middle. Leadoff batter Lauren Witzke scorched a line drive right at Braziel at third base for the first out, and then sophomore Danielle Rice grounded out to third base, and suddenly GBC was down to its final out.
Sophomore Cailin Cavanaugh saved the day as she stepped up to the plate and belted a two-RBI triple that scored Waterloo and Antosh to tie the game. The next batter, Myers followed with a double over Leonard's head in center field to send home Cavanaugh for the winning run, and GBC pulled through for a 4-3 victory.
Starting pitcher Heather Draper took a no-decision as she tossed five innings and allowed one unearned run on no hits and two walks while striking out six. Sophomore Sadie Jones (3-2) picked up the win as she pitched the final two innings and allowed just one earned run on two hits and one walk and struck out three.
Game 2: GBC 5, Nyack 0
Behind a dominant pitching performance by Miller (5-3), the Lightning completed the sweep with a 5-0 victory, scoring one run per inning in the first, third, fourth, fifth and sixth innings while Miller tossed a complete game shutout.
Miller faced 22 batters and gave up just two hits (neither of which left the infield), walked none and struck out five.
Sophomores Ashley Paige and Waterloo led the Lightning with two hits apiece, and scored two runs and one run, respectively. Witzke, batting in the leadoff spot, was 1-for-2 with a walk, two runs scored and an RBI, and Rice had a game-high two RBI.
The Lightning will wrap up the season on Sat. when they host CACC foe Dominican College. The Chargers were ranked No. 7 in the East in the latest regional poll. GBC will be celebrating Senior Day and will honor Kim Narkiewicz and Lauren Witzke before the start of the game.
