PIKE CREEK, Del. – Three runs in the sixth inning of the first game and six runs in the fourth inning of the second game propelled the No. 2 ranked team in the Atlantic Region, Kutztown University Golden Bears to a sweep (7-3, 8-0) of Goldey-Beacom College in non-league softball action on Sunday afternoon at Nancy Churchman-Sawin Athletic Field.
The Lightning, who have now lost 11 straight games, fell to 14-21 on the season while Kutztown, of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference, improved to 37-14.
Game 1: KU 7, GBC 3
After allowing three runs in the top of the first, freshman pitcher Tori Anne Davies (2-4) settled into the game and finished the day having allowed just four runs (three earned) on seven hits and one walk in five innings of work.
The Lightning battled back to tie the game in the bottom of the third inning when they struck for three runs on four hits and one Golden Bear fielding error.
Senior Lauren Witzke connected on a one-out base-hit to begin the rally, and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore shortstop Ashley Paige. Sophomore Danielle Rice drove in Witzke with an RBI single and advanced to second on the throw home to the plate. Then, sophomore Cailin Cavanaugh singled, and Rice advanced to third. Sophomore Shannon Graves then reached on an error while Rice came in to score and Cavanaugh moved onto third. Graves stole second and then junior Jackie Waddle walked to load the bases for sophomore Jordan Waterloo, who drove in the tying run with an RBI single. The next batter was retired however, as GBC stranded three base-runners that inning (eight for the game).
Kutztown would regain the lead with an unearned run off of Davies, aided by one of two Lightning fielding errors on the day, and go up 4-3 in the top of the fourth inning. The Bears would add three more runs in the sixth inning, which would hold up as winning pitcher Katlin Arbogast (23-8) quieted GBC's bats for the final four innings.
Game 2: KU 8, GBC 0
Starting pitcher Monica Glomb tossed four scoreless innings, allowing just two hits and zero walks, and the Golden Bear bats busted the game open in the fourth inning with six runs as Kutztown cruised to an 8-0 victory in five innings in the nightcap. Stephanie Pritchard came on in the bottom of the fifth inning to pick up the save.
Freshman starting pitcher Ashley Antosh (1-3) held Kuztown scoreless through two innings, and kept GBC within 1-0 after three, but left the game in the fourth inning after she was tagged for six runs. Sophomore Sadie Jones made her second relief appearance of the day and allowed just one earned run on three hits and a walk in 1.1 innings of work.
Kutztown was led offensively by Krista Tedjeske (two hits, three RBI), Nicole Henninger (two hits, two RBI) and Katie Lynch (two hits, two RBI). The Golden Bears outhit GBC 11-3 in game two. Paige, Rice and Waddle each collected a hit for GBC.
