PIKE CREEK, Del. – The Goldey-Beacom College softball team suffered a narrow, 4-3 loss in the first game and then an 8-0 loss in the second game against a red-hot Philadelphia University Rams team in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play Thurs. afternoon at Nancy Churchman-Sawin Field.
GBC (14-17, 6-14 CACC) has now lost its last seven straight games and nine straight conference matches. Philadelphia, meanwhile extended its win streak to seven and improved to 17-13 overall, 9-5 in league play.
Game 1: PU 4, GBC 3
After falling behind 3-0 in the first inning, the Lightning rallied to tie the score in the bottom of the sixth. First, sophomore centerfield Cailin Cavanaugh ripped a two-RBI triple scoring senior catcher Lauren Witzke and sophomore shortstop Ashley Paige, and then sophomore first baseman Shannon O'Hara sent Cavanaugh home on an RBI double.
But in the top of the seventh, PU brought one run across playing small ball. With one out, Jen Richard reached on a single. The next batter, Kacie Demaio grounded out to the shortstop, Ashley Paige, but Richard advanced to second. Kelly Rauco then ripped a clutch, two-out base-hit past O'Hara into right field to score Richard for the winning run.
GBC could not mount another comeback in the bottom of the seventh, and Philadelphia went on to win 4-3.
Freshman Leanne Miller got a no-decision as she pitched five innings and allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits. She walked none and struck out three.
Sophomore Sadie Jones came on in relief in the sixth inning, and took the loss as she allowed the winning run on three hits in two innings of work.
Philadelphia's Ali Schmidt picked up the first of two complete game victories in the circle on the day. She allowed just three earned runs on five hits and two walks while striking out three.
Game 2: PU 8, GBC 0
Although the Lightning were not manufacturing runs off of Schmidt, they were very much alive, down 1-0 until the top of the fifth inning when the Rams erupted for six runs on eight hits.
Philadelphia added one more run in the top of the sixth and held GBC scoreless in the bottom half of the inning to take the second game by virtue of the eight-run rule.
Starting pitcher Heather Draper took the loss. The junior tossed 4.1 innings and allowed five runs (four earned) on eight hits and two walks while striking out two. Jones again came on in relief, and allowed three earned runs on six hits in 1.2 innings of work.
Sophomore designated hitter Danielle Rice and Cavanaugh each tallied two hits for the Lightning, who combined for five hits as a team.
Schmidt again earned the win, tossing six scoreless innings and allowing just five hits and four walks while striking out five.
The Rams were led offensively by six batters with two hits, including Danielle Parisi who was 2-for-3 with a game-high three RBI's.
