PIKE CREEK, Del. – The Goldey-Beacom College softball team split its doubleheader with cross-town rival Wilmington University in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play Thurs. afternoon at Nancy Churchman-Sawin Field, winning the first game 4-1 before dropping the second, 4-2.
Sophomore right fielder Shannon Graves led the way offensively for the Lightning in game one as she collected three RBI's, two of which came on a double in the first inning. Freshman Leanne Miller pitched a gem, allowing just five hits and one earned run while striking out three. Junior Heather Draper came on to close in the seventh, and earned the save after walking just one batter.
Draper got the start in the second game and pitched four scoreless innings before the Wildcats tagged her for two runs in the top of the fifth frame. The Lightning bounced back in the bottom of that frame and tied the score when sophomore designated player Danielle Rice ripped a double that hit the very top of the fence in left-center field and drove in two runs.
With the score tied heading into the seventh and final inning, the Lightning committed two costly errors and allowed Wilmington to go ahead 4-2. GBC could not get those runs back in the bottom of the seventh as they lost by just that margin.
The Lightning are back in action on Sat. when they host Bloomfield College at 1 p.m. at Churchman Field.
