BRISTOL, Pa. – The Goldey-Beacom College softball team scored five runs in the top of the seventh inning to knot the score at six, only to give up the game-winning run in the bottom half of the frame and fall to Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference foe Holy Family, 7-6 on Sun. afternoon.
The CACC rivals were scheduled to play a double-header, but rain forced the second game to be postponed to a later date. The Lightning fell to 9-7 (3-4 CACC) with the loss while HFU improved to 8-13 overall and 4-3 in the conference.
Senior Lauren Witzke and sophomores Danielle Rice and Shannon Graves led the Lightning with two hits apiece. Rice and Graves each had three RBIs.
Trailing 6-1 and facing their last at-bats of the game, the Lightning struck for five runs on three hits, including a three-RBI blast by Rice and a two-RBI homerun by Graves, and evened the score at six-all.
Freshman Tori Anne Davies came on to pitch the final inning and retired the first batter she faced with a groundout to shortstop. But she walked the next batter she faced, Angela DiBeneditto, and later allowed her to advance to second on a wild pitch. Bianca Robinson came on to pinch run for DiBeneditto, and after the Lightning dropped a foul ball that would have accounted for the second out of the inning, Cassandra Black took advantage of a second opportunity and cashed in with the game-winning RBI single.
Davies, the third Lightning pitcher of the day, is credited with the loss. Junior Heather Draper started for GBC and allowed three hits, four runs (two earned) and two walks while striking out three in four innings of work. Sophomore Sadie Jones came on for two innings of relief, allowing one hit, two runs (one earned), and two walks while striking out one.
