PHILADELPHIA – Strong pitching and timely hitting helped the Goldey-Beacom College softball team sweep its doubleheader against Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference foe Chestnut Hill College on Thurs. afternoon at CHC Softball Field. The Lightning (9-4, 3-1 CACC) held off winless CHC (0-14, 0-4 CACC) with wins by scores of 4-1 and 4-2.
Game 1: GBC 4, CHC 1
Junior Heather Draper started on the mound for the Lightning and allowed just three hits, one earned run and one walk while striking out four. She was relieved by sophomore Sadie Jones, who tossed three innings to pick up the save with just two hits and two walks allowed. Jones struck out four.
GBC jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning when sophomore catcher Danielle Rice singled through the left side to score second baseman Jackie Waddle from third, but the Griffins would tie it in the fourth after a walk and two base-hits.
Sophomore shortstop Ashley Paige started things off in the fifth with a leadoff base-hit up the middle. First baseman Shannon O'Hara then executed a sacrifice bunt to move Paige to second, who would score on another RBI single by Rice to give the Lightning back the lead, 2-1.
The Lightning would add two more insurance runs in the sixth, and Chestnut Hill could not manage any offense against Jones as GBC held on for a 4-1 victory.
Game 2: GBC 4, CHC 2
Freshman Tori Anne Davies picked up a solid win for the Lightning as she went four innings and allowed just four hits, one unearned run and one walk while striking out three Griffins on the day. Fellow freshman Leanne Miller earned the save with three innings of work, during which she allowed just one hit, one unearned run and struck out two Griffin batters.
After a scoreless first frame, the Lightning put two on the board in the second inning via an RBI single by third baseman Jordan Waterloo and an RBI double by senior catcher Lauren Witzke.
Chestnut Hill managed to cut into the lead with a two-out rally that yielded one run in the fourth inning. But in the fifth inning, sophomore right fielder Shannon Graves led GBC on a two-out rally of its own. Graves doubled down the left field line, then advanced to third on a wild pitch. Paige singled to left field and scored Graves from third. A double by Rice would send Paige all the way home from first on the next at-bat, giving the Lightning some insurance, up 4-2.
The Griffins threatened in the bottom of the seventh when the leadoff batter singled and two more reached on errors. But Miller never wavered, retiring the next three batters in order and only letting the Griffins score one unearned run on one hit and two errors in the inning.
GBC is back in action on Sat. afternoon when they visit the pre-season conference favorite, Caldwell College for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
