PIKE CREEK, Del. – The Goldey-Beacom College softball team split a doubleheader with Concordia in its Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference season opener on a beautiful Saturday afternoon at Nancy Churchman-Sawin Field.
The Lightning (5-4, 1-1 CACC) used a brilliant complete-game shutout by freshman right-hander Leanne Miller (2-0) and an RBI single by senior catcher Lauren Witzke in the fifth inning to win 1-0 in the first game, but were shut out 5-0 in the second game. With the split, Concordia moved to 4-7 overall and 1-1 in conference play.
Game 1: GBC 1, CCNY 0
The front end of today's doubleheader was dominated by pitching as Miller and Concordia's Alexa Rosella engaged in a classic pitcher's duel. Miller pitched a complete game shutout, allowing just five hits and one walk while striking out five. Rosella (0-3) allowed four hits, one walk and one earned run in six innings of work.
Miller was able to get herself out of minor jams on a few occasions as the Clippers stranded seven base runners on the day. Goldey-Beacom did also strand four, but plated one in the fifth that eventually proved the gamewinner.
Junior second baseman Jackie Waddle started the GBC rally in the fifth inning when she drew the only walk of the day by Rosella. Freshman left fielder Ashley Antosh executed a fine sacrifice bunt to move Waddle to second, followed by a clutch base hit by sophomore third baseman Jordan Waterloo that advanced Waddle to third. Then, with runners on first and third, Witzke came through with a single to score Waddle and give Miller and GBC the only run they would need to win the game.
Concordia threatened in the top of the sixth inning when Jaime Lorenzo and Rosella had back-to-back singles to begin the inning. With Rosella and Lorenzo on second and third, respectively, Angela D'Amico hit a groundball right at Waterloo, who immediately tagged an off-the-bag Lorenzo for the crucial first out. Then, Concordia's Theresa Magnani grounded to Waterloo, who went to first base for the force-out while D'Amico and Rosella advanced to second and third on the throw. Finally, Miller forced a weak dribbler right back to the mound by Maria DeMartino, and she calmly gathered it and threw her out at first to escape the inning unharmed.
Miller retired the side with ease in the seventh frame to earn the win.
Game 2: CCNY 5, GBC 0
After a silent first game offensively, it didn't take the Clippers' bats long to make some noise in the second game as Concordia tagged GBC for two runs in the first inning and three in the third. Meanwhile, CC's Jillian Maselli (1-3) pitched a complete game shutout as the Clippers took the second game, 5-0 to make things even for the day.
The Lightning's freshman pitcher Tori Anne Davies (1-2) took the loss as she allowed five hits, four runs (three earned) and one walk to go with one strikeout. Junior Heather Draper came on in relief in the third inning and allowed four hits, one earned run and one walk while striking out eight in five innings of work.
Rosella and DeMartino each drove in two runs to lead Concordia offensively while Maselli gave up just three hits and three walks to earn a complete game shutout victory.

GBC is back in action tomorrow when they go on the road to play a doubleheader at Penn State Abington at 2 p.m.
