PHILADELPHIA – The Goldey-Beacom College women's basketball team rebounded from its loss to Holy Family on Thurs. night as the visiting Lightning dominated non-conference foe Cheyney University, 73-45 on Sat. afternoon at Cope Hall.
With the win, GBC improves to 5-5 on the season while Cheyney, which was coming off a two-week layoff, fell to 4-4. The Lightning improved to 1-2 against the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference.
Redshirt-junior guard Jacinda Jones (16 points, 6-of-6 from the foul line) gave the Lightning the lead for good when her three-point field goal at the 18:09 mark put GBC ahead, 5-2. That shot began a 15-3 Lightning surge that put GBC in front 20-5, and the lead stayed in double-digits the rest of the way.
The Lightning's trio of sophomore forwards dominated in the paint en-route to GBC's largest margin of victory of the season (28). Irene Hudson scored 14 and pulled down five rebounds, Akilah Sewell dropped in 11 points and grabbed six rebounds, and Devonne Richardson registered five points and a game-high 11 rebounds.
GBC out-rebounded the Wolves 45-37 and played much more efficient offensively with a 17/21 assist-to-turnover ratio compared to Cheyney's one assist and 23 turnovers.
The Lightning's depth was on display today as nine different players entered the scoring column, including senior guard Janae Weldon (nine points on three treys) and sophomore guard Lindsay Duck who scored all seven of her points at the free-throw line as she made 7-of-9 for the afternoon.
Cheyney's 45 points was the fewest points allowed by the Lightning all season, and the third time in four games they have held their opponents to under 50. The Wolves shot an abysmal 25 percent from the field for the game, including 18 percent shooting in the first half. Meanwhile, GBC shot 41.7 percent from the field, including a sizzling 48 percent in the second half.
Head coach Jen Carleton's Lightning are off for the next 12 days before they host the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference's Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) on Thurs., Dec. 30 at 4 p.m.
