PIKE CREEK, Del. – The Goldey-Beacom College women's basketball team went on a 12-0 run that cut a 22-point deficit to 10 midway through the second half, but two straight three-point field goals for the game's leading scorer Meghan Gibson allowed Holy Family to pull away for a comfortable 68-48 victory in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play Thurs. night at the Jones Center.
With the win, the Tigers extended their NCAA Division II record regular-season conference winning streak to 106 and assumed the lead in the CACC South Division. The Lightning's four-game win streak came to an end as they fell to 4-5 overall and 3-1 in league play.
Redshirt-junior guard Jacinda Jones led the Lightning with 19 points, four rebounds and four steals while sophomore forward Irene Hudson pitched in nine points and eight rebounds (team-high five offensive boards). In addition, sophomore forward Devonne Richardson and senior forward Arielle Alford pulled down 11 and eight rebounds, respectively.
Holy Family had three players score in double-figures including Gibson (24 points, eight rebounds), Erin Mann (11 points, 12 rebounds) and Samantha Thompson (11 points).
The Lightning held their own on the glass against the Tigers, who came into the game the second-best rebounding team in the conference with a roster featuring 11 players 5-foot-10 or taller. GBC lost the rebounding battle by a slim 42-41 margin, but did manage to grab 17 offensive rebounds on the night.
Where GBC did struggle was shooting, as Holy Family outshot the Lightning 40.7 percent to 26.6 percent for the night. The first half saw GBC shoot 5-of-27 (18.5 percent) as the Lightning produced their lowest scoring output in a half of play this season with 15. They trailed, 32-15 at the break.
The second half was a much more even affair, but the damage had already been done in the first half. Trailing 42-20 at the 15:33 mark, the Lightning gave a valiant effort to get back into the game by going on a 12-0 spurt over the next 5:13. Freshman guard Melanie Johnson came off the bench to knock down two three-point shots, including the trey that closed the lead to 42-32 at the 10:20 mark.
But right back came the Tigers as Gibson upped the lead back to 16 with two consecutive three-point field goals, and Holy Family never looked back. The Tigers closed out the game with a 26-16 run as they improved to 18-0 in the all-time series against GBC.
The Tigers had the upper-hand at the foul line (17-of-24 to GBC's 9-of-15) and were more efficient with the ball (16/16 assist/turnover ratio while GBC's was 7/18).
The Lightning will look to bounce back on Sat. when they face non-conference foe Cheyney on the road at 1 p.m.
