NYACK, N.Y. – An already limited Goldey-Beacom College men's soccer squad overcame two more in-game injuries on Sat. afternoon to force two overtimes against the host Nyack College, but let the game slip away in the 104th minute on a Felix Horn header goal off a free kick.
Already without two of its key players, freshman midfielder Andre Jank and junior forward Kwame Appiah, the Lightning (2-9, 1-6 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference) lost senior forward Erlin Rodezno and sophomore forward Matt Bik to injuries for 25 and 20 minutes, respectively.
Still, a stout Lightning defensive line and another outstanding effort by sophomore goalkeeper Ignacio Farias (eight saves, one goal allowed) kept GBC in position to win. Unfortunately, the Lightning could not capitalize as they were shut out for a second straight game.
“We don't want to win with luck, but continuing to lose because luck is against us is frustrating,” head coach Dr. Michael Finizio said. “We started off well, creating a couple of opportunities. The team played a well-organized defensive game in the second half, and we actually had the best opportunity to score with about three minutes to go [in regulation]. We are playing well, the defensive unit is well-organized…finishing remains a weakness.”
Nyack (4-8, 3-5 CACC) had a commanding 24-4 shot advantage and a 7-2 differential in corner kicks, but the Warriors put just nine shots on goal. They outshot GBC 19-4 in regulation but it was not until Horn's goal in the second overtime that the Warriors broke the scoreless tie.
About a minute or so into the second overtime session, an errant pass by a GBC defender resulted in a turnover about 25 yards away from the Lightning goal and began a Nyack breakaway. Another Lightning defender rushed back to recover and tripped up the Nyack player with possession of the ball which resulted in a free kick for the Warriors. On a set play, Babjide Fatoba served a ball into the box for a streaking Horn, who rocketed the ball off his head past Farias for the game-winner at 103:56.
Up next for GBC is a visit to Bloomsburg University where the Lightning will take on the Huskies under the lights Wed. night at Sports Stadium. Kick-off is at 7 p.m.
