BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The Goldey-Beacom College men's soccer team, battling all kinds of adversity this season, continues to put forth tremendous effort on the field, but Wed. night, the Lightning allowed the only goal of the game in the waning minutes of regulation and lost 1-0 at Bloomsburg University.
The Lightning, who suffered a 1-0 double-overtime loss on Sat. at Nyack their last time out, fell to 2-10 on the season while Bloomsburg, of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference, improved to 4-6-2.
“Another incredible ending for our soccer team,” head coach Dr. Michael Finizio said. “We had critical chances to go ahead, including a breakaway one-on-one with the goalie with 15 minutes left in the game, but we missed it. We were still missing some key players; yet, we played well and managed to get through their defense several times – a definite improvement over the Nyack game.”
According to Finizio, Bloomsburg attacked more, but it was the Lightning who had more “clear cut” chances. Bloomsburg held a 15-7 shot advantage, but the two teams were equal in shots on goal (5-5). Sophomore Matt Bik and junior Rob Cann each tallied three shots.
Sophomore goalkeeper Ignacio Farias took yet another tough loss, stopping four shots and allowing just one goal in a full 90 minutes of work. Bloomsburg's Bernie Roell stopped four shots to earn the shutout victory.
The Huskies kept offensive pressure throughout most of the first half, earning six corner kicks, but the Lightning defense was up to the challenge, keeping the game scoreless at intermission.
With time winding down in regulation, Alex Ruhfass served a long pass into the penalty box that connected with Michail Georgevic whose one-touch shot sailed over Farias' head for the freshman's first career goal at the 85:19 mark.
Next up for Goldey-Beacom is its homecoming game against Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference rival Concordia College. Kick-off is at 2 p.m.
