LAKEWOOD, N.J. - Freshmen forwards Devonne Richardson (14 points, 12 rebounds), Akilah Sewell (12 points, five rebounds) and Irene Hudson (11 points, four rebounds) led the Goldey-Beacom College women's basketball team to a 61-50 road victory at Georgian Court University in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play Thurs. night.
The Lightning improved to 6-8 (2-4 CACC) and have now won four of their last five games, including the last three as they look ahead to Tues. night's matchup with intra-city rival Wilmington University. GCU fell to 3-10 overall and 1-5 in league play.
GBC struck early, going on a 5-0 run to start the game, but the Lions came roaring back with an 8-2 run to take the lead, 8-7. The lead changed hands a few times before two free throws by Hudson at the 6:56 mark would put the Lightning ahead to stay with an 18-17 advantage. Those free-throws started a 13-1 Lightning surge to end the first half, capped by a layup by sophomore guard Evebonee Acosta.
Hudson led the Lightning with eight first-half points, followed by Sewell with six points, including a conventional three-point play that ignited her whole team at a crucial point in the game. Meanwhile, the Lightning played stingy defense, holding the Lions to just 19 percent (4-of-21) shooting from the field, and took a 29-18 lead into the break.
The second half was played to a complete stand-still, with both teams scoring 32 points and shooting 33.3 percent from the field. Richardson (nine points, five rebounds) and junior guard Janae Weldon (seven points) helped the Lightning maintain their halftime lead.
For the game, GBC held a 40-32 rebounding advantage and scored 18 second chance points as a result of 17 offensive boards. The Lightning outscored GCU in the paint, 24-8 and turned 18 Lion miscues into 15 points.
GBC will next face Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference foe and intra-city rival, Wilmington University on Tues., 6 p.m. at the Joseph West Jones Center.
