WILMINGTON, Del. – The Goldey-Beacom College golf team recorded a team score of 620 on Sunday to place fourth out of eight teams as the Lightning opened their 2009 fall season at the Wilmington University Fall Classic.
The host Wilmington captured the team title with a score of 594, 17 points ahead of second place Wesley College at 611. McDaniel College (Md.) was third at 612, followed by GBC at fourth and Nyack College at fifth with a score of 649.
Senior Matthew Quigley led the Lightning, shooting an even par in the first round and six over par in the second for a score of 148. He finished fifth overall in a field of 58 golfers.
Freshman Devon Ripley finished tied for 13th with a score of 154. Ripley shot an 82 in the first round, and then improved by 10 strokes and earned a 72 in the second round.
Fellow freshman Justin Armstrong shot a 155 (76, 79) and finished tied for 16th, and junior Wesley Hood shot a 157 for a 22nd place finish.
Junior John Marstellar finished tied for 26th with a score of 161, followed by freshmen Michael Coppa Jr. and Daniel Logsdon who both finished 30th with scores of 163. Then junior Erik Tammsalu finished tied for 39th place with a score of 168.
GBC is back in action on Tues. afternoon as it hosts the Goldey-Beacom Fall Invitational at the Chesapeake Bay Golf Club.
