Wilmington, DE – Lightning Softball falls to West Chester in double-header
Junior Lauren Witzke led off the bottom of the first inning against West Chester University today with a double to centerfield. A single to right field from freshman Shannon O'Hara scored Witzke, and put the Lightning on the board, but West Chester came charging back in the second, scoring 8 runs. The Rams would score three more runs in the fourth inning and one more in the fifth, to take game one, 12-1.
In game two, the Lightning took the lead when freshman Danielle Rice singled to center field, to drive in two runs for a 2-1 Lightning advantage. West Chester answered back with two runs in the second, to reclaim the lead. The Lightning struggled to bring runners around the bases safely for the next couple of innings, but rallied in the fifth inning, when they scored two more runs off singles from freshman Shannon O'Hara and Danielle Rice, and one more from an error. However, the Rams continued to put runs on the board, and walked away with an 11-5 win.
Danielle Rice led the Lightning offensively, as she went 4-5, and drove in 3 runs for the two games. Lauren Witzke went 2-5, with 3 runs scored, while freshman Shannon Graves led defensively, with 5 putouts and 3 assists.
The Lightning will next travel to Flushing, New York to play Queens College on Saturday, April 11, 2009 at 12:00pm.
