Wilmington, DE – Lightning strikes in the 5th inning of both games to rally past Columbia Union

The Lightning played host to non-conference rival Columbia Union College yesterday, and watched Pioneers jump to a 2-0 lead by the middle of the second inning.  The Lightning answered back, as freshman Jordan Waterloo's sacrifice fly to right field, drove in classmate Cailin Cavanaugh, who earlier doubled.  Neither team scored again, until the bottom of the fifth inning when freshman Leah Bowman led off with a double to right center.  After senior Danielle Hufford's single, freshman Shannon O'Hara doubled to drive in two more Lightning runs.  Freshman Ashley Paige followed with a double down the left field line to score two more runs for the Lightning, and complete the 5-run rally.

Columbia Union scored two more runs in the seventh, but the Lightning held on for a 6-4 win.  Shannon O'Hara picked up her fourth win of the season with 5 strikeouts.  Leah Bowman went 3-4, with 2 doubles and 1 run scored for the Lightning, and senior Bridget Mount led on the defensive side with 6 putouts.

In game two, junior Lauren Witzke led off the bottom of the first with a single for the Lightning, and scored on a Shannon O'Hara sacrifice fly to give the host a 1-0 lead.  The Pioneers answered back in the next two innings, scoring four runs.  Danielle Rice drove in Lauren Witzke for the Lightning's second run of the game in the bottom of the third.

Both team's bats went cold, until the bottom of the fifth, when the Lightning would once again rally.  Singles by Jordan Waterloo, Lauren Witzke, and Leah Bowman loaded the bases.  Shannon O'Hara drove in the first run of the inning, and freshman Cailin Cavanaugh followed with a single down the left field line to bring in two more, giving the Lightning a 5-4 lead.  Freshman Ashley Paige ripped a triple to score two more runs, and a single from Danielle Hufford scored the final run for the Lightning, who cruised to an 8-4 win.

Leah Bowman continued her hot-hitting, going 3-4, with one run scored.  Sadie Jones notched win number five for the season, and Shannon O'Hara led defensively from first base with 8 putouts.  With the wins, the Lightning improves to 15-13, 4-8 in the CACC.

The Lightning will next host their cross-town CACC rivals the Wilmington University Wildcats on Tuesday, April 7, 2009 at 3:30pm.
