Wilmington, DE – Lightning drop doubleheader against USP

The Lightning softball returned to their home field after a 10 game road trip to face CACC rival the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia Devils on Thursday afternoon.  Freshman Shannon O'Hara took to the mound for the first game, and pitched well, surrendering 5 runs (3 earned) on 10 hits, while recording 6 strikeouts.  However, six Goldey-Beacom College errors, and key hits from the Devils, saw the Lightning drop game one 5-3.

Junior Lauren Witzke led the Lighting at the plate, going 2-4, with an RBI and a run scored, while O'Hara went 2-3.

In game two, freshman Sadie Jones, took the mound for the Lightning, as they looked to gain a split with the Devils.   Unfortunately, the Lightning struggled at the plate, as USP pitcher Erin Degnan threw a 3-hit shutout to complete the sweep 5-0.

With the losses, the Lightning drop to 11-13 overall and 2-8 in the CACC, while USP improves to 8-16, 4-2.

The Lightning will continue their home stand on Saturday, April 4, 2009, as they play host to Felician College at 1:00pm.
