Wilmington, DE – Lightning come close in double header with Bloomfield College

After a week and a half of rain delays, the Lightning returned to play on Saturday against CACC rival Bloomfield College.   Bloomfield scored two first inning runs, as the Lightning struggled at the plate, with one hit in the first four innings of play.  The Deacons increased their lead to 4-0, after adding two more runs in the top of the sixth.  In the bottom of the sixth, the Lightning rallied when junior Lauren Witzke and freshman Ashley Paige singled, and freshman Shannon O'Hara loaded the bases after being hit with a pitch.  The Lightning's first run came off a wild pitch, and after freshman Cailin Cavanaugh walked, junior Kim Narkiewicz drove in the Lightning's second run with a single to centerfield.  With bases still loaded, Danielle Rice earned an RBI when she was hit by a pitch.  The Lightning unfortunately were unable to score again and Bloomfield took game one 4-3.

Kim Narkiewicz led the team, going 2-3, and an RBI.  Lauren Witzke recorded 11 putouts from behind the plate, and freshman pitcher Sadie Jones earned a game-high 12 strikeouts for the Lightning.

Game two saw the return of Lightning sophomore Heather Draper to the mound.  Bloomfield once again took a 2-0 lead after the first, and the Lightning struggled until the bottom of the third.  Freshman Jordan Waterloo's leadoff single, started another Lightning rally.  Ashley Paige's single to right center moved Waterloo to third, and a key hit from Cailin Cavanaugh drove in both runners, tying the game at 2-2.  The Lightning continued their scoring in the next inning, when sophomore Jackie Waddle, who singled, raced home after senior Bridget Mount doubled to centerfield.  A Lauren Witzke sacrifice fly drove in Mount, increasing the lead to 4-2.  Bloomfield came back in the top of the fifth, tying the game up at 4-4, and added the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh.  In the bottom of the seventh, Lightning were able to get a runner in scoring position but were unable to bring her home, as Bloomfield took game two 5-4.

Bridget Mount went 2-2 (both doubles), with one run scored and one RBI.  Cailin Cavanaugh went 2-3, with 2 RBI's, while Shannon O'Hara led defensively with 7 putouts from first base.

The Lightning will next travel to Holy Family University on Tuesday, April 21, 2009.
