PIKE CREEK, Del. – The Goldey-Beacom College women's basketball team, down four players on its roster, held off a late St. Michael's College run and hung on for a tough, 67-62 non-league victory Mon. night at the Joseph West Jones Center.
Red-shirt sophomore guard Jacinda Jones led the way with 23 points, six rebounds, two assists, three blocks and a steal. Jones was one of four Lightning players in double-figures. Lindsay Duck, one of two Lightning players to make her first start of the season, had 13 points, seven rebounds, two assists and a steal. Red-shirt freshman guard Ashley Rosario pitched in 12 points, six rebounds and two assists, and freshman forward Devonne Richardson scored 11 points to go with eight rebounds, a block and two steals.
The Lightning ended a four-game losing skid and improved to 2-7 with the win as St. Michael's College, of the Northeast-10 conference, fell to 3-6.
SMC led 7-6 early on when GBC came up with the first of two 14-0 runs in the game to go ahead 20-7 – the Lightning would never trail again. The Purple Knights did counter to cut the lead to 33-29 at the half, and continued to apply pressure after the break, tying the score twice in the second period. The Lightning never did let the lead slip though, and went on another 14-0 run to take a 53-37 advantage with 9:09 left to play.
The Purple Knights did not quit as they answered with an 11-0 run to quickly pull within 53-48 at the 4:44 mark, but head coach Jen Carleton's squad was not about to let this one slip away. A 5-0 response (Jones with an old-fashioned three-point play and Richardson with a pair of free-throws) restored the lead to 58-48 with 3:34 left in regulation, and SMC could not mount a serious rally from then on.
GBC was doubled up by the Purple Knights in three-pointers (8-4), but outshot SMC 39.0 percent to 31.7 percent from the field and held a 44-39 rebounding advantage.
The Lightning are back in action on Dec. 29 when they host the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference's Bloomsburg University at 6 p.m. in the Jones Center.
