PIKE CREEK, Del. – The Goldey-Beacom College women's basketball team will look to get into the win column tonight as the Lightning host the undefeated Golden Rams of West Chester at 6 p.m. in the Jones Center.
GBC (0-2) has had a rough start to the season, dropping its season opener on the road at St. Thomas Aquinas, 72-58, and then most recently falling in its home opener on Sat. against Cheyney, 66-60.
Despite a career-high 30 points from redshirt-sophomore guard Jacinda Jones on Sat. afternoon, the Lightning could not overcome 25 points allowed off of 26 turnovers and a lopsided, 24-5 disadvantage in bench points.
Head Coach Jen Carleton's squad played hard from start to finish, even closing the gap to 60-57 with 3:40 left to play. But Cheyney (1-1) would answer with back-to-back layups to secure the victory.
Jones, who was given honorable mention by the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference on Mon. for her efforts last week, will lead the Lightning tonight as they try to defend their home court against their second straight Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference team.
The Lightning have lost the last two meetings in the series. The first of those two losses came in Carleton's head coaching debut in the Millersville Tip-Off Tournament on Nov. 16, 2007 when the Lightning lost a heart-breaker, 68-67 on a Catherine Andrews running, one-handed bank shot with 2.2 seconds left in regulation.
The two teams met again just last season, with West Chester getting the upper-hand, 91-63. Janae Weldon led the Lightning with team-highs of 20 points and three assists that night.
The Golden Rams enter tonight's game with a 3-0 record that includes wins over CACC member USP (75-62), Lock Haven (72-49) and UDC (77-49). Thus far, they are winning games by an average margin of 21.5 points per game.
Tip-off is at 6 p.m., and the Lightning men's game versus WCU will follow after the women's game is concluded.
