NEW CASTLE, Del. – The Goldey-Beacom College women's soccer team controlled the action for the majority of the game, outshooting Bloomfield College 24-13 and taking six corner kicks while allowing none; yet, the Lady Deacons came away with a 3-1 victory on the Lightning's senior day Thurs. afternoon, held at Kirkwood Soccer Complex.
GBC falls to 2-13 on the season overall and 1-10 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play. Bloomfield improved to 3-13-1 overall and 1-10-1 in the conference.
The Lightning outshot BC 15-5 in the second half as sophomore Marissa Valladares scored her second goal in as many games to bring the Lightning within a goal at 2-1 a little over 20 minutes into that second stanza. But the Lady Deacons cashed in on the few opportunities it had as Erika Len extended the lead back to two as she finished off a pass from teammate Stacey Jones to give BC a 3-1 advantage.
Prior to Valadares's goal, BC had built a 2-0 lead on two Laura Nunnery goals. The first came almost six minutes into the action when she took a pass from Len and buried it past the Lightning's sophomore goalkeeper Kristin Degenhardt. Then in the 65th minute, Nunnery intercepted a Lightning defender's pass and scored an unassisted breakaway goal.
Degenhardt played the full 90 minutes and made five saves while allowing three goals. BC's Adriana Moreno made eight saves and allowed just one goal to earn the win.
Valladares led the Lightning offensively, scoring their lone goal and recording a game-high seven shots. Junior Ashley Welch took five shots and freshman Kelly Williams took three while also adding an assist on the Lightning's goal.
GBC will wrap up the season at CACC foe Concordia tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m.
