Wilmington, DE – Lightning come close but fall in the end to Chestnut Hill
The Lightning hosted the Chestnut Hill College Griffins in the opening of the CACC games for the season. Senior Kendra Russell took the mound in the first game. The Lightning went off to a great first inning start of 3-1 and kept the lead through the 5th inning. The Lightning were then bombarded with unfortunate errors and the Griffins took the lead from the Lightning in the top of the sixth inning and never let the Lightning get close to scoring again. The Lightning fell in the first game 4-5. Russell moves now to 3-1 for the season so far. Megan Harper had 4 putouts from behind the plate while hitting 1 for 3 (double) with 2 RBI's and 1 run scored. Kim Narkiewicz hit 1 for 1 (double), stole a base, and was walked twice.
Freshman Heather Draper took the mound for the second half of the double header. Neither the Lightning nor the Griffins seemed to be having any luck with scoring in the second game. The Lightning started the scoring off with a triple to right center from Junior outfielder Danielle Hufford. With a double from Senior Jill Murphy Hufford was able to score and put the Lightning ahead 1-0. The Lightning seemed to have it all locked up as the top of the 7th inning came about. It got closer that they might win as Draper struck out the first batter of the inning. But with an error the Griffins luck turned around and they scored twice before there at bats were done. The Lightning fell to the Griffins 1-2. Sophomore Kim Narkiewicz and Senior Jill Murphy recorded doubles while Junior Danielle Hufford recorded a triple.
