Wilmington, DE – Women's soccer dominates in win over Wilmington
The Lightning women's soccer team traveled cross-town on Wednesday for a CACC game against Wilmington University. Heading out on the field for the first half, the Lightning looked to win their second game in a row.
In the 23rd minute, the Lightning was the first to score, when Kate Attenberger sent a thru-ball to Karin Eriksson, who beat the Wilmington goalkeeper for the goal. Three minutes later, Wilmington tied the game up with a goal from Ashli Gerlach.
The Lightning responded in the 30th minute, as Taylor Faunt finished a corner kick from Ashley Longo to put the Lightning up 2-1 at halftime.
The Wildcats tied the game in the 59th minute, when Ashli Gerlach scored her second goal of the game on a penalty kick. The Lightning would pull ahead again three minutes later as Karin Eriksson scored her second goal of the game off a cross from Victoria Myers.
Five minutes later, the Wildcats' Taryn Sanchez would score to level the game once again. However, Lightning forward Karin Eriksson recorded her third goal of the game when she intercepted a defender's pass and beat the goalkeeper with a shot to the lower left corner of the goal.
Clinching the game three minutes later for the Lightning was a goal by Marisa Valladares from Ashley Longo to make it 5-3.
The Lightning was led by Karin Eriksson with 3 goals, Ashley Longo with 2 assists and Kristen Degenhardt with 15 saves.
The Lightning will next play host to Nyack College on October 18, 2008 at 1:00pm.
