Women’s Soccer Falls in its Season Opener at Shippensburg

Goldey-Beacom did its best with a re-shaped roster still looking to blend, but was handed a 6-2 season opening loss at Shippensburg in Shippensburg, PA.

Goldey-Beacom this year sports a predominantly different look with 14 newcomers that included five starters in today's match, plus a red-shirt freshman who was on last year's roster and a sophomore who joined the squad during last season.  Second-year coach Mitch Kazanjian is in a better spot this season with an entire spring and fall preseason to work with after taking over last year right before the start of practice.

The first goal went the way of the Raiders in the ninth minute.  Ryleigh Cook took a corner kick from the right side before Cailin Spelman won a battle inside the six and headed it home.

Shippensburg made it 2-0 in the 28th minute, cashing in on another set piece and a header.  Sammy Lerario got a free kick from the left side and Ashley Hughes was there to head it across the line.

The Raiders got to the back of the net with 91 seconds remaining in the first half for a 3-0 margin.  Jordan Lytwyn took the ball on the right side and made a great individual play to shake loose before tallying.

Goldey-Beacom gave up a goal early in the second half, but sophomore Jessica Jensen (Las Vegas, NV) made a solid play to score in her Lightning debut.  Taking the ball in the middle, Jensen had her initial shot stopped before following up the rebound in the 55th minute for a 4-1 game.

Jensen in the 84th minute again found the scoreboard in making it a 5-2 contest.  She received a long ball from junior Tamara Trumic (Spiegelberg, Germany) and flicked it over the goalkeeper to complete her brace.

Jensen arrived this season from Whittier College after being named 2024 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Newcomer of the Year.

Jensen and freshman Nova Gafvert (Eskilstuna, Sweden) had three shots apiece with sophomore Jennifer Klumpp (Hockessin, DE) making four saves for the Lightning (0-1).

Hughes and Lytwyn each scored twice for Shippensburg (1-0).

Goldey-Beacom on Sunday is at Mercy for a noon match.
