Johnny Kampes Named CACC Baseball Player of the Week

3/20/2023 12:00:00 AM

A strong week that had Goldey-Beacom shine in the national spotlight saw senior catcher Johnny Kampes (Colora, MD) named the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Player of the Week.

Kampes batted .462 (6-for-13) on the week with two doubles, a home run, five stolen bases, four RBI and 29 putouts against No. 10 Southern New Hampshire in helping Goldey-Beacom take three of four games.  He had two hits and a double in game two Friday, a 7-4 GBC triumph.  Kampes also had two hits in game one Saturday and crushed a big two-run homer in game two for a doubleheader sweep.

Goldey-Beacom's impressive play on the national level is nothing new.  Among that include a victory earlier this season against 16th-ranked Millersville, two triumphs in the 2021 NCAA Tournament over No. 18 Saint Thomas Aquinas, a win over No. 10 Millersville in 2020, a memorable doubleheader sweep in 2019 over 21st-ranked Wilmington and a victory in the inaugural 2017 campaign against No. 16 Felician.

Kampes has been a stalwart behind the plate the last two seasons, giving the Lightning clutch hitting and outstanding defense.  He has a hit in 13 of his 19 contests this year and has notched double digits in putouts four times.

He is fourth in the CACC with 11 stolen bases, fourth with 115 putouts, fifth with 15 RBI and fifth with seven doubles.  Kampes is eighth in school history with eight career home runs and 11th with 15 doubles.

GBC last week entered seventh in the East Region, according to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.

Goldey-Beacom on Wednesday opens CACC play at home against Alliance, beginning at 2:00 pm.
