Softball Reveals 2023 Schedule

1/24/2023 12:00:00 AM

(2023 schedule)

The drastic improvement of Goldey-Beacom's softball team was on full display a season ago and more success should be on tap in the new campaign as the squad announced its 2023 slate.

GBC is scheduled to open things with a 10-game homestand in February, beginning on the 7th against Millersville.  The squad during that time also is scheduled to host Lincoln (PA), Washington Adventist, Lock Haven and Saint Rose.

The team for a second straight year in early March will head to Myrtle Beach, SC and partake in the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic.  The Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference opener is March 18 at home against league-debutante Bridgeport.

March also features home games on the 25th against perennial power Caldwell and a road date on the 29th at Jefferson.

April sees a challenging foe on the 6th with a trip to Wilmington and a home tussle on the 18th with reigning league champion Georgian Court.  The regular-season and league finale is April 26 at Dominican (NY).

The Lightning for a second straight season will feature two special dates on their home schedule.  The March 23 doubleheader against Queens (NY) sees the team host Faculty and Staff Appreciation Day, honoring those at the College who play a big role in helping the program.  The April 22 doubleheader against Post brings a return of Past/Present/Future Bolt Day, welcoming the alumnae and committed student-athletes to meet with everyone.

A new format to the eight-team CACC Tournament sees a two-game series April 29 each at the site of the higher seed (No. 8 at No. 1, No. 7 at No. 2, No. 6 at No. 3, No. 5 at No. 4).  The higher seed requires just one win to advance to championship weekend and the lower seed needs to win both contests.

Championship weekend will be held May 4-6 on the campus of Georgian Court in Lakewood, NJ.

One of the key components back in the mix is senior second baseman Carly Setting (Newark, DE), who last season was picked second team All-CACC.  A solid player who gives the team hitting, speed and strong defense, she is back to lead what already is a talented infield.  One of two for GBC to start all 45 games, she finished ninth in the league with 16 stolen bases, 14th with 10 doubles, 17th with 69 assists, 18th with 49 hits and 19th with 27 RBI.

Junior left fielder Hannah Davis (Bethel, DE) also started all 45 games a season, is one of the program's top hitters and has not missed a start in the Lightning's 80 games the three previous seasons.  Another solid athlete who brings the squad great leadership, Davis ended last season 12th in the CACC with 11 doubles, 12th with 14 stolen bases, 24th with a .397 on-base percentage and 36th with a .323 batting average.

Sophomore Morgan McLane (Clayton, DE) first stepped foot into the collegiate circle a season ago and more than showed her impact, recording 10 victories (seventh in the CACC) and 74 strikeouts (ninth in the CACC) that both were top-10 marks in program history.  One of the area's top pitchers and one of the college's top overall student-athletes, McLane also finished third with a .203 batting average against and her 10 victories already place her 18th in team history.

Senior pitcher Chrissy Jordan (Pasadena, MD) has given the Lightning two strong seasons both in the pitching circle and at the plate.  A vital player who competed in 45 games last season with 43 starts, Jordan ended 33rd in the league with 41 hits, 27th with three home runs, 28th with 24 RBI and 29th with a .342 batting average.

Junior Nicole Makin (Edgewater Park, NJ) has been one of the program's most important players and leaders over the last four seasons, giving the team exceptional play and many options both as an infielder and an outfielder.  Starting all 44 games she played a season ago, the two-time member of the CACC Academic Honor Roll closed 70th in the nation with four triples, 39th in the CACC with 20 RBI and 28th with 108 putouts.

The Lightning (24-21, 10-14 CACC) a season ago under first-year coach Juli Greep recorded their highest victory total since getting 27 wins in 2005, notched their most league victories since posting 14 in 2017 and closed one victory shy of making the CACC Tournament.  The roster featured 10 newcomers, of which many saw extensive playing time during the campaign.
