Baseball Gets Two More on the CACC Weekly Honor Roll

4/25/2022 12:00:00 AM

Another solid week for Goldey-Beacom's baseball team saw it get more accolades with junior catcher Marshall Awtry (Hockessin, DE) and senior pitcher Jake Heskett (Derwood, MD) each making the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Weekly Honor Roll.

Awtry continued his unbelievable play in batting .550 (11-for-20) on the week with three doubles, three home runs and six RBI.  He had four hits, two doubles that included one for an RBI and a run-scoring single Wednesday in Goldey-Beacom's 13-8 victory at University of the Sciences.  Awtry homered in both games Saturday at Caldwell in closing the doubleheader with three hits and then had two hits in each contest Sunday against University of the Sciences.

All of this helped extend his school-record hitting streak to 22 games.

It has been a beyond impressive season for Awtry, who is one of the area's top hitters and defensive catchers.  He is first in the CACC with a school-record 12 home runs, 10th with a .366 batting average, seventh with a .680 slugging percentage and is tied for the team lead with 15 multi-hit games.

Heskett struck out five over seven innings, allowing just one run and two hits in Goldey-Beacom's 5-1 victory Saturday at Caldwell.

Heskett has been the staff's ace for quite some time in helping provide great play for one of the area's top rotations.  He is fifth in the league with four wins, fourth with 57 strikeouts, first with 63 1/3 innings pitched and first with 11 starts.

Goldey-Beacom (23-21, 14-5 CACC) once again is making noise one year after playing in the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history and winning the CACC South Division.  In its sixth year and fifth non-COVID season, the Lightning this year broke the school record for most overall wins and are riding a team-best 15-game home winning streak.

GBC is two games behind Wilmington (16-3) for first place in the CACC South Division and a first-round bye in the conference tournament that comes with it.

Goldey-Beacom and Wilmington play each other three times this week with the first game on Wednesday at Doyle Field in Hockessin, beginning at 2:00 pm.
