Baseball Reveals 2021 Schedule

2/22/2021 12:00:00 AM

(2021 schedule)

Baseball is back at Goldey-Beacom and the 2021 season offers plenty of optimism as the squad announced its schedule.

Due to the ongoing pandemic and travel restrictions, the squad only will compete against fellow members from the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference.  A four-game homestand the first week of the season gets things going with Goldey-Beacom hosting Chestnut Hill on March 23 and reigning North Division champion Post four days later.

Local games of interest early include visiting Chestnut Hill on March 28, hosting University of the Sciences on April 6 and then returning the favor with the Devils on April 11.  GBC then visits Jefferson on April 20 and hosts the Rams on April 25.

The final week of the regular season should provide plenty of intrigue with the squad visiting reigning CACC champion Wilmington (DE) on April 28 and then hosting the Wildcats on May 2.

A format that was in place for league games last spring finally will get a chance to be implemented in 2021.  GBC will face its South Division opponents three times with a single game at one site and a doubleheader at the other.  The five other teams in the division are Chestnut Hill, USciences, Nyack, Jefferson and Wilmington.

Goldey-Beacom will battle the six teams in the North Division twice, consisting of one doubleheader, and those games are against Post, Dominican (NY), Caldwell, Concordia (NY), Bloomfield and Felician.

Please note that on days when a single intra-division game is scheduled, the coaches have the option of adding a non-conference game to make it a doubleheader.  Some likely will be announced after the season begins.

As is normally the case, the top four teams in each division go to the CACC Tournament.  However, a pandemic-related move has reduced it to a single-elimination format with each individual game at the higher seed.  The first and fourth seeds in each division play each other with the winners facing either the second or third seed in the division final.  The two division winners battle in the conference final with the champion earning an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.

The tournament takes place from May 7-15 with the exact dates for each round to be determined.

With no spring student-athlete losing a year of eligibility, many quality players are back on what already is a potent lineup.  One of them is senior infielder Justin Hill (Seaford, DE), who has provided consistency and incredibly solid play as one of the program's original players.  A gifted athlete who has meant everything to the team, Hill enters the year first in school history with 135 hits, 64 RBI, 11 home runs, 27 doubles, 89 runs, 38 stolen bases and 384 assists.

Senior catcher Ivan Solis (La Chorrera, Panama) had an incredible 2019 in batting .356 and last year was on pace for another strong campaign, hitting .310 in the aborted campaign to give him a stellar .342 career average.  Also a consistent player who is another rock of the program, Solis enters the year with a .473 on-base percentage and a .452 slugging percentage.

Junior pitcher Jake Heskett (Derwood, MD) also played solidly last year, ending with two victories after closing 2019 with a .215 batting average against and a 2.35 ERA.  Sophomore Anthony DiMartino (Sicklerville, NJ) in 2019 started all nine games in which he appeared, ending 28th in the CACC with 38 strikeouts.

Junior Trevor Jump (Wilmington, DE) looks for a return to the same form that helped him to be named second team All-CACC in 2018.  He ended ninth in the league a season ago with 18 strikeouts over four starts, moving into second in team history with 86 career strikeouts.
